E30 (1982 - 1993)
God's Chariot. The E30 was produced primarily from 1982 through 1991. The cabriolet was the one exception which was produced through 1993.

E30 318i engine swap

I recently inherited a 'close to mint' 88 318i 2dr sedan and I'm looking iinto some cost effective engine swaps with reasonable power returns, haven't yet decided on wether it want it to be a stealther or just in your face obnoxious. I'd like to know what mototr to go with, my original thought was to go simple and dump the S14 in it, but I wouldn't mind the niceties of the M60, yet futher indesicion when a mate said it might be worth it to put a M90 from a 635 in.
I am relativley new to both BMWs and major mechanical work and any advice, considerations or options would be a great help.

Welcome to the fest!

You're in the wrong forum. You have an E36. This is the E30 forum. Usual engine swap into an E36 is an S50/52. I doubt you could find an S14 for reasonable money, and it wouldn't have the hp or torque a six would.

actually, I don't know what you have, by the year, it's an E30, but they didn't make the 318i in any door conf in 88. in 84/85 yes, a 2dr. the only other time the 318 nomenclature was offered in a 2dr was in 91 as the 318is, unless it's not 88, but rather 98, but then for the E36, there was no "i" just an "is" for the 2dr. Do you have a Euro car? Anyway the most economical and common swap is an M50 motor from a 1992+ E36. If you want a monster try the S54. If you are going engine swap you'll need to swap your susp springs too. Swapping a different engine will be a significant investment. Be sure you love this car for all the heartaches you'll run into or it may sit as an incomplete project.

An S14 might be ideal, but, as mentioned, i'll cost you 3-4x as much as a 6.

Its a custom built model, made as some bastardised hybrid of Euro and Aus spec. My grandfather was more so into the ride than the power. But the rear badge and the manual both say 318i. Its a 2 door rhd. And as far as i can make out it was manufactured in either 87 or 88, given that the first service was performed in England 89, this being after a large tour of Europe. My difficulties lie in the fact that the car is over 5000kms away in Canberra and until i transport it up here, i dont have access to comp. plates or the like. Its been garaged away for roughly 2 years and i know i have to replace the starter motor and diff (going with the is lsd). My overall goal is to get more power out of it either way supposing i can always re work the exhaust later.
