New to M5- Just got 2014 M5 with Competition and Executive Pkg.

Hello. I just traded my 2011 750i for a Singapore Grey / Sakhir Orange & Black 2014 M5 this past weekend.
I have competition package and executive package but my sales guy ordered M343 20" wheels instead of the usual competition wheels by mistake and I overlooked it on the order. It was too late to change by the time I found the mistake... But the 343 wheels work well with the color combination and the car drives so much sharper than the 2013 MY without the competition pkg so I'm fine. Anyway, I posted some photos. Hope to get some good information on this board!

Great combo. I'm a huge fan of red as a color now.

I was always a tan/wood guy but having carbon, red, and seeing it all works makes me a fan.

Thanks, guys.
Yeah, I like these wheels more and more.
I was also very conservative with my color choices (silver/black or white/tan) but I love this combo.

Yes he did! The 343's are forged and much lighter than the cast comp. wheel.

Wrong, 601Ms are light forge as well, plus its 0.5 wider on both the front and rare, u are pretty much saving $0 by getting an older style wheel which is also 0.5 narrower front/back. It can handle a bit worse too due too.

Don't get me wrong, the 343s are one of the best looking wheels, but if you already paid the premium for a comp package, no really any reason to get 343s over 601s.

The Comp. wheels on the M5/6 are ugly IMO - I'd have gotten the same wheels you have.

Love that color.

Unfortunately, and disappointing to most, you are incorrect yourself. There was a discussion regarding the 601M wheels recently on another forum (much more active for M5s). Ultimately, it was concluded (from BMW - see below) that the new 601M are cast (not forged) and heavier (~5lb/wheel if I recall). Whether or not they are 0.5 wider is still debated. Personally, I like the 601M wheels (I ordered them on my build), but most M5 enthusiasts prefer the 343. Those who have seen the 601M in person, however, feel they look much better than the pictures.

Below is the email (from another poster):

Thank you for contacting BMW of North America, LLC.

We appreciate your patience while we researched your request. We are unable to provide a specific weight for these wheels, but we can advise that the 20" 601-M wheel is a casted wheel and the 343-M wheel is a forged wheel and the lighter of the two. We hope this information is helpful.

The BMW Customer Relations and Services Department is available Monday through Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m., ET. You can reach us at 1-800-831-1117.

That's been the bone of contention for a lot of people. There were posts by BMW people on another forum that confirmed what eleven11 said above.

It was explained that if someone was going to buy a competition package, then they would most likely want competition wheels of their preference anyway, hence the cast wheels.

To be honest, I wish they would have done similar with the stock as the 'market' is pretty flooded with 20"343M's right now.

You got the better wheels. M5Post confirmed with BMWNA that the Competition Package wheels are cast and heavier than the forger 343M wheels. Basically the Comp Pkg wheels are cheap, heavier and softer than the 343Ms.
