”driverless”

Cars that can park themselves, technology to wake us up and let us know when we are too close to others on the road. These days cars can do almost anything to help us out and some are on their way to completely driving for us. This seems like the direction some automakers are headed. Taking the driver out of the equation…well, for the most part.

BMW is among the leaders in autonomous technologies, but the German automaker isn't in any hurry to get this technology to the market though, admitting that it's "not a priority," to be first. A good thing I guess, since they do build the 'ultimate driving machine.' The 'ultimate ride-along machine' just doesn't have the same ring to it. BMW already offers many assistance packages, which many drivers simply turn off, in order to fully enjoy the driving experience. So, BMW is listening to their customers and what they want to do, which is drive.

“BMW is a driver’s car and we are certainly under not too much pressure to be the first ones out there to have a fully autonomous driving car. We have the engineering ability to do it, but we are listening very carefully to our customers and what they really want to do.

Work is still being done to move this technology forward. BMW in collaboration with automotive supplier Continental are developing a "co-pilot system" capable of fully autonomous driving that could be introduced by 2020.

“So, our priority is to be on top of the game from an engineering point of view but we feel that it is not our priority to be the first autonomous driving car in the marketplace.”

There is a killer video out there featuring a 5 series that had that technology on it. It's amazing to see. I wouldn't mind a car that can drive itself when I'm sitting in traffic but can switch to a driver's car when I hit the back roads or track

^ Exactly BMW!
Some of us still want to actually drive the cars that we buy.

I certainly don't need a car that parks itself, but shifting into auto-pilot once in a while would be nice.

I imagine it'll soon be legal to take a call or send a text message when the car is doing the driving.

It would appear they've had a change of heart.
