Glad all worked out well. I'm laughing imagining the techs @ the dealer hooking up all sorts of gadgetry, desperately trying to explain what's wrong with the car. Two days later, common pre-inspection routine, and sense, prevailed and the problem was identified.....
That part's my fault. I dropped the car off before going on a extended trip, the light was on before me flying out but I didn't want a whole tank of fresh gas sitting there getting stale for a month, and when I came back, I forgot about it and just got in and drove... There was still some gas in the tank, but I am thinking it lost some potency during the time i was away and just didn't burn maybe?... I am not gonna run less than a half tank from now on! no sir...

...So I guess it's possible my gas gauge isn't accurate, but i don't think that's a big problem to be fixed urgently?

Yeah, I realize, luckily, it cannot get any more dumber since that's all that's happened in this instance. Not trying to troll or anything, but I think after hearing all these break down stories on these forums, I just wanted to share a story where it seem like the engineering failed us, but in reality it is I who failed it

I'm done. Thank you all for chirping in in the last week. Safe driving!

It's better to leave a whole tank of gas on your car

It's better to leave a whole tank of gas in your car
when you leave it for awhile and some fuel stabilizer if a really long time .
That way moisture from the air in the tank
cannot condense into water.

Gas isn't going to go stale in a month.

Hmmm, my E90 shows a miles to empty count down that will come back even if you switch to another screen.

Not to add to your humiliation, but how'd you miss that?

I agree. Whenever I get the GONG, and huge yellow gas tank symbol followed by the countdown I always think to myself ....How can anyone run out of gas in this car?? Hmmm, I guess it is possible.

Glad it was nothing serious.

To be honest, after 4 years with the car, I gotten quite used to (and good at) pressing the button on the stalk whenever the gas low or snow flake warning comes up, especially when the temperature is just warm or cold enough that sets off the snow flake multiple times in 1 trip... bad habit, i know...

Also it was just a convergence of things as well, before I drop off the car I knew it had some gas in it, about a gallon, I think the range read 20 miles, which I thought it would be enough to get me home when I return and gas up at my favorite gas station which was 13 miles away. But it certainly did not last the full 20 miles after I returned from my trip, more like 10 miles, and in my panic during the breakdown, I forgot to check the gas level and instead made up all these mechanical breakdown scenario I had read around here. Lesson learned
