Well, 7 Billion people, but not all in well developed areas.

Say 2 billion in well developed areas at, say, 60% ownership.
Say, 3 billion in moderately developed at 25% ownership.
Say, 2 billion in less developed at 5% ownership.

OK, I'll take a stab at 2,050,000,000. On inspection, that number looks awfully high, but that's my story and I'm sticking with it.

Edit: Then again, they're not all adults, so I'm adjusting down 25%. New shot is 1,537,500,000. Still feels high.

Automobiles, not light trucks, SUV's and recreational vehicles? If so I'm in for under a billion.

Did you see what happened when not logged in hovering over the word automobile in Cal's original post did?

It tried to open an ad for a VW Toureg. So much for theory that SUV's should not be counted as automobiles.

Would you include the "car"casses buried on the pineapple farms in Hawaii to add iron to the soil?

.

And the answer is: 1.017 billion vehicles registered worldwide....as of 2010. According to Wards Auto.

Now? Too boggled to think.

Wait a minute...you went from "automobiles" to "vehicles." Vehicles could include large (class 8) trucks...thus making DSX's answer almost spot on (for 'cars').

Aw shucks, I think you got me....Wards does not spec passenger cars only.

Specificity. It's a very good thing!

So 1,017,000,000 in 2010, growing at +/- 3.6% per year. Run out 3 years, and it should be around 1,131,000,000 now. And I believe the question was "on planet Earth", not "registered".

I demand a recount!

Aha! The automobile is an automatic mobility machine, which would include motorcycles; mopeds. Motorized skates?

We may agree that an automobile that has been crushed and melted down is no longer an automobile.

We might confine our definition of automobile to be those capable of mobility, not junked, parted, or otherwise out of service.

To achieve a level of confidence, we may exclude unregistered vehicles as we cannot know if they exist or not; are capable of automatic mobility or not. Wheelchairs and scooters are out.

With the full force and backing of governments worldwide, for what's that worth, Wards' figure is a best number for the world automobile population. An Archimedes moment.
