X1 paint chipping

Hi, this is my first post. I picked up my new 2014 X1 in July, 2013 after having over the past 15 years 2 3-series models. I loved my prior 2004 328x but it was getting older with a lot of mileage and starting to burn oil. So I made the switch to an x1. Does anyone have any issues with paint chipping in the rear at the base of the tailgate? Any after market rubber stripping that anyone has tried? I do lot of VT winter driving and think the paint issue will only get worse. Thanks.

I would take it to the dealer ASAP. Paint on a brand new 2014 BMW shouldn't be chipping after only a few months (or even YEARS) from normal use. The paint may not have been applied properly from the factory. I believe the paint warranty is 3 years.

What? 2004 328? Never heard of that one. IIRC, 2004 offered 325 and 330 only.
Paint should be covered under warranty if it is a factory defect.
If it's been damaged somehow(non-warranty claim) then best bet is to touch it up after getting rid of any rust or maybe have a body shop take care of it.

Oops

oops - you're right - it was a 325 not 328. On the paint - the dealer/service manager says the paint chipping is normal when taking (or sliding) things in and out of hatchback due to the "sharp corner." I sent an email to BMWUSA customer service about this - normal use of hatchback - even sliding things in and out - should not result in paint chipping. I also noticed that a dealer loaner car had the same issue. I'll post BMWUSA response. Thanks.

YES. Have had this problem with my 2013 X1 after only five months. Haven't had a chance to take it into the dealer yet to complain.

Would someone mind posting pix of the damage? I'd like to see what to look out for. Thanks.

X1 Paint Chipping

I have had the same problem w/my 2014 X1, along the back and also along the driver & passenger doors. Did they fix yours?

I have 2 other BMWs and have never had this problem.

They didn't fix mine, they didn't believe that the chipping wasn't my fault. I escalated a couple of levels with no luck. I'm really annoyed by the whole thing, especially since it would cost $700 to get the bumper repainted. Though in the end I simply had to drop it and move on, as I'm a very busy guy and didn't have the time to keep pushing it further. Rather than repaint it, I stuck on a bumper protector for the time being.

Given that your chipping is more extensive, you might have an easier time persuading them that it's a factory flaw.

Get some clear 3m vinyl and apply it to that area. That was the first thing I did to prevent paint damage on the bumper lip of the trunk. You can't even see it, should have been done from the factory.

Did not fix mine. Have touch up paint which helps. Also very careful loading and unloading from hatch. Vinyl or plastic sounds good. Wish an option or after market black strip was offered to protect this area.

There is an aftermarket black strip... I got a bumper protector from www.rearpaintguards.com. I'm happy with it, it looks nice and seems well made.

Though you have to be very careful when installing it. It stays in place with double-sided tape that's extremely sticky. I didn't put it on perfectly, and once it starts to stick, it's impossible to move... So it's kind of annoying, mine looks fine when viewed straight on, but when viewed from the side, part of it is overhanging the bumper.

Thanks

Thanks so much for letting me know about the after market protection strip. A great holiday present just in time for ski season- thanks for the info. The touch-up paint method is not very effective.
