TheFinanceGuys E39 540i build thread

Hello all!

I just bought a E39 99 540 with 145,000 miles yesterday. This will replace my E36 once fully sorted.

Found the car online on a dealer lot. Figured overpriced. To my excitement, it wasn't. Drove 130 miles to go look and bring it home.

Has a few small issues.

*The cluster suffers from dead pixels.
*Needs front breaks.
*Slushbox.
*Ugly wheels...
*Small exhaust leak.
*Also on my way home the CEL popped up showing a misfire. My guess, bad gas. It's been sitting since July.

Despite the misfire, I still managed to get 26.4 mpg along the 130 miles of highway.

Had to tow it off the lot because it would not pass Maine state inspection. No problem, was let down 1 mile of dealer, and drive home.

So far I really enjoy this car! The interior is wicked clean!

Today it will go to my Indy for fluid change and a look over. Hopefully he can get an MA inspection sticker on the car. I have to travel for the next week for work.

More pictures later!

Plans currently:

*pass inspection
*new wheels, though I'll need winter shoes in 2 months anyway. Probay wait till after winter.
*exhaust? Want a more deep throaty sound
*billies all around with H&R springs (again, after winter)
*upgraded nav unit? I've looked around a bit, seems like a few options exist.
*items I haven't thought of yet.

Please, bear with me as a learn the E39 chassis and the M62 engine. I've been in the E36 world for the last 3 years.

Ohh, had to get my E36 home. AAA to the rescue.

Before you commit to Bilsteins, search clunking + Bilstein. This is a problem unique to e39s. It doesn't happen to everyone but it happens enough that I would urge caution. Some may only regard it as an annoyance, rather than a problem. It's your car, your money, your call.

And you may have noticed the long thread for a group buy on Eonon audio/nav unit. Before you consider that unit, read the entire thread. There are lot's of issues with that unit. Again, your money, your car, your call.

Enjoy the ride.

Get Koni shocks. they rock . Except the stupid front lower spring perch, they need to weld that dam thing in place. Other than that, they are exceptional.

I'd update the nav to MKIII and a 16:9 monitor.. less problems.

Those are OEM 540 auto wheels. If you upgrade, save them for winter, and mount a good snow gobbler on them.

Upgrading sound/nav is problematic, since there were a number of upgrades over the years, and early cars were left out. Be sure of what you're buying.

I'm actually running koni's on my E36 in the sig picture. I like them but think they are a bit soft. Which I wouldn't mind in the 540.

Thanks for the heads up about the struts. I actually haven't read about the E39 front struts. Just sorta assumed what works on the E36 would work well on the E39. I'm actually still sorta shocked I bought this.

I have actually read the nav group but thread. Basically left me thinking I'll need to read more and see what I want to spend.

Trying keep spending under control on this.

Welcome to the E39 forum. All aftermarket nav units that are popular have problems unfortunately.

No V8 came with a GM tranny. All ZF.

Dang on the soft side? When I put these babies in at 3/4 from soft rear & 1 from soft front, it's pretty dam stiff!

Probably the largest difference came from switching out my blown coilovers to a strut/spring combo.

Das 540 has new plugs and a new coil as of tonight.
Last week the engine threw a misfire code, and started stumbling under load. Code said cylinder 3 had misfired multiple times. So I replaced plugs and that coil. I could swapped coils around, but I'm short on time these days. Was easier/quicker to throw a new coil in.

I should have also replaced the boots-but I forgot to order them in time.

I ran up the street and back, and on my! So smooth. No engine stumble. More testing on my way to work tomorrow.

Cylinders 7&8 had some oil in them. Also that side seems to be leaking out the back. Guess VCG is in my future.
Cylinder 3 looked fine actually.
All plugs said BMW Bosch so I'm guessing they were original.

Plugs 1-4

Yes. I wear gloves.

Off to bed now. Could just unplug the battery to clear the code... Sigh. I'll wait till tomorrow when my generic OBDII reader comes or I'll swing by my Indy and have him reset.

Since winter is upon us, I think you should look into the condition of your window regulators, two of mine went out within a month and if it were to happen during winter, it would've been pretty annoying to deal with.

Also, things to check or look at:
-Vanos seals (if in need of repair, often restores solid amount of power back to the car)
-Cleaning the throttle body, the m62 tb can often get a bit sticky
-look into an m60 intake manifold swap

Snow is flying today at my house. Only a few flurries. Makes me second guess my decision to not put winter tires on the 540.
I had 205s on my E36, but think those are too small/skinny for the 540.
I don't feel like laying out $400 hundo for new winters.
So-anyone in snow areas-am I going to regret this? Keep in mind I can work from home whenever I want, and have a 2012 Subaru forester which is awd.

I parked the 540 in the garage yesterday in preparation of removing the cluster to send out for pixel repairs.

It has been a while since I posted an update. I don't have much to post about, however there a few updates.

I got my cluster back from www.bimmeronly.com and so far it looks and functions great! It is very nice to not have to guess what the cluster is saying.

I picked up a set of M5 tuning fork wheels and almost new summer tires

I was able to enjoy the goodness that is 18in wheels for about two months, then the cold. Purchased a set of Blazzacks for the winter. I wasn't going to spring for a set of snow tires, however, after seeing the shiz show of how the 540 handled on the summer tires- I opted for safety.

I also replaced my broken kidney grills with blacked out M5 kidneys

Tinted the windows at 35% all around

And did a little cyber Monday shopping and picked up a set of rotors and pads. These will be installed after the holidays.

They are brembo rotors

Next on the list is to service the transmission and replace all that lifetime fluid and filter. Due to time constraints on my work schedule, I will have my indy perform this service.

Yes, they are. I should have noted that. For the price, I couldn't complain, since I got them and the rubber for FREE!

Time for a small update.

The New England winter has been long, so not much has been done.

I finally got my new brembo rotors and akabono pads on

Got my tuning fork wheels cleaned up and repainted. Had to have two new wheels mounted, as one had a large bubble- and the other was a bit dry rotted.
Was also able to find a BMW roof rack for hauling the kayaks around this summer.

I got the three finger salute (DSC, Brake, and ABS light), tracked back to a faulty speed sensor- replaced, but it shorted out promptly- tracked back to the DSC module. Replaced with a used/rebuilt unit and good to go!

So- as it sits now.

Nice work. How much were the rotors and where did you get them from? And how are they? I need to get my brakes done soon.
