lean codes

530i E39 2002 After problems with throttle body I've replaced intake hoses and throttle body and done adaptation. Now a month latter I'm getting lean codes p1085/p1083/p0171/p0174 so now were do I look. The shop I took it to did a once over the system when they installed all the new parts. Now on a different note my DSC light is on. Brake system and abs is fine no codes with this problem . The steering wheel is slightly off when driving down the road no more then 12:05 on the clock is this enough to set off the DSC light.

IMHO you need to have a smoke test done to find vacuum leaks. These are many places that could be leaking that you could never see. For instance, it could be the throttle body gasket that was, I assume, just changed. I'm not suggesting that your shop made a mistake, I'm just demonstrating that there can be vac leaks that you can't possibly see by "doing a once over."

If the smoke test shows no vac leaks, I'd remove and inspect the DISA valve and plug in a scan tool that can display how much air intake the MAF is reporting.

I don't know much about faults in the DSC but if the light is on, there must be a fault code. The DSC is a proprietary BMW system so you need a scan tool that can access those systems.

Edit-How come your steering wheel is off center? If it is a result of an alignment, get the shop that aligned the car to fix it. If it 'just happened,' you probably need an alignment. The steering angle sensor, located on the steering column, is a sensitive and important part of the DSC.

dvx216 did you find out what was going on with your codes? I have a 2001 530i with the same codes that came on yesterday. My car pulls to the left when I let go of the steering wheel so I will be going for an alignment sometime in the week or so. Also have you felt the car slightly lose power while driving then return to normal when you give it a little gas? Thankyou jonhstern for that info on the steering wheel sensor, I didn't know our cars were that sensitive about alignment! Thanks

As for those codes, a year ago I had same codes. Found no visible vacuum leaks so I went ahead and ordered a DISA valve gasket and replaced it since I found many threads leading to it and I wanted to take it off to see condition of the valve itself anyway. Valve seemed good except from it was sticking slightly. Replaced gasket seal, put all back together and have not had any codes since.

This was my lean code misfire saga, which took me a year to fix, and which may benefit you by the debugging steps ...
