2014 Map Update notice

Got an email this morning from BMW USA telling me there is a 2014 map update for my X1. I am going to check to see whether this update might already be in my car, since I took delivery within the last few weeks, and if it isn't I will see if I can get BMW to agree the update should not cost me $250. But for those of you picking up cars with Nav soon, make sure you get the most recent map version, or an agreement to give it to you, before you pick it up, just in case.... and then next update we can all buy a Garmin with lifetime maps for $150, or just use our cell phones...

My X1 was produced in August 2014 and I just checked & I have version "North America Premium 2013-2". New version update is "USB 2014 Version 1A". Have placed a call to my dealer - waiting to hear back on what they are willing to do.

If I remember correctly:

go to navigation screen
click options with idrive
go to last item - navigation version

2014 Map Update notice

Last year they had a voluntary recall for the 2013 X1 to update the maps to 2013. It was free since many people complained about the MY2013 not having the latest map. If you have a 2014 I hope they do the same.

Where did you get the info about the number/name of the new version? Mine is the same as yours but my service guy claims mine is the latest and greatest so I want to prove him wrong...

does seem a shame that we have to convince dealers of what should be done - instead of them agreeing initially & just doing the right thing

2014 Map Update notice

The irony is that they have a serious brake issue but no solution and charging us the price of a good garmin or cellphone upgrade for a map upgrade.
I am not happy and glad I have a 2 year lease. 1 to go.

What really sucks is charging $1000s for navigation, then charging $250 more for yearly map updates, at a time when we all get navigation for FREE on our phones.

I got the same damn notice. The dealer told me when I bought my '14 X1 in August of this year that the NAV maps and system "automatically" update themselves through BMW. I am NOT about to pay $250 for a Map Update 2 months after I bought the damn car.

Has anyone installed the 2014 Map Update? If so, what version is it? I am about to pick up a new car and asked what version of the Navigation maps it includes and am told it is 2013-2. I suspect the 2014 Map Update is not version 2013-2, but wanted to see if anyone knows. I will not be pleased to buy a car with outdated maps.

I just picked up our '14 X1 a couple weeks ago and it shows 2013-1A for the Nav version. I just reached out my CA to see about getting the update installed. I'll report back how it goes!

Im about to pick up my X1 this Thursday and I have a funny feeling that it would still have the 2013 version. I was just wondering... how much could one year make a difference? I mean, right now my 2009 Garmin that never got updated can still bring me to places

Is it a prerequisite for future updates? Can I just do an update every other year?

I'm still waiting for a response from my dealer. But I will say my last car was never updated for 5 yrs. and I never saw a problem. It would only really matter for POI's - I think. Its not really like the roads change that much??

Depends on whether where you need to go is, or recently has been, under a lot of road construction and new development. Some places yes, some places not so much. My Garmin got me (very briefly) misrouted trying to get from Albany to Poughkeepsie because of highway interchange construction a month ago. But I figured it out. Generally, I can't imagine it makes much difference most places, especially for the past five years or so when there has been so little development most places.
My point was those who just bought a new BMW or had one on order ought to get the freshest version to stave off eventual map obsolescence. I bought a Garmin a few years back and they came out with new maps about 2 months later, and they gave me the update for free. BMW should do no less, especially given what they charge and how they sell based on their customer service, quality and the BMW experience. All scheduled maintenance is covered for 4 years; maps ought to be part of that, IMHO- would BMW recommend you let your maps get out of date? I think not. Just sayin.'

FYI, I just got a call from my SA at the dealer and she was able to get approval for BMWNA to pay half and the dealership to pay half for my 2014 map update. They said this normally isn't standard practice as the eligibility is based on build date (mine was 06/17/13)...and my car was built before the 2014 map update was released. But in this case BMWNA wanted to "help the customer"! Hey, made me happy! Just waiting on a the dealer to get the update disk/USB...she will call back when they have it for me.

Still waiting for my dealer, my build date was 8/13/13. Hope I get as good outcome as you. Congratulations.

I would be interested to learn whether you get version 2004-01 or 2003-2 as "the latest version". A number of other BMW vehicles get version 2004-01 now, but I understand the latest version for the X1 is 2003-02. I'm not sure why. Anybody know?

It will be the 2014-1 version. Apparently the dealership didn't even have the media for it yet it was so new. Should be in early next week.

Just spoke with the GM at Richmond BMW Midlothian. They are going to give me a loaner car and install 2014-1 version at no charge to me this coming Monday.

I Checked out my History and it appears that i had a navigation update done on October 8, 2013... The report says

Description: B65 15 12, Navigation Map update

Is this the correct one?

I don't think so. New one is dated 2014-1. I took this photo after mine was updated.

I took delivery of my 2014 X1 35i & two weeks later got the email re. the new navigation update from my install of North America Premium 2013 - 2 to 2014 Version 1. Dealer did the up date at no charge. Today I get email saying
"Earlier this month, you may have received a Navigation Update email from BMW. Due to a technical glitch, this email was sent to you in error. There is no need for you to update your vehicle's maps at this time.

We apologize for any inconvenience or confusion this may have caused.

Thank you for your understanding.

Sincerely,
BMW of North America, LLC"

Makes me wonder if they are just trying to cover not having to give out free updates to folks like me, or if there really were no changes??
