Air Conditioning Issue

I have a 2004 X5 3.0i which I have owned for about 5 months now. A few weeks after I purchased the vehicle I noticed one day the Air Conditioner did not work after I started it. I drove the X5 to town and ran a few errands and when I got back into the vehicle to drive home the Air Conditioner started working again. It worked for several weeks with no issues, then one day for no apparent reason did not work again when I started the car. This has gone on since May. I called my mechanic and he said the A/C needs to not be working when I bring it in. Not sure what to make of this. Any ideas on what I might be able to try to save a mechanic bill?

Thank You.

You're still using AC this time of year? It's been hovering around 32 degrees here in the well as many parts of the Midwest.

Or are you using "AC" as a catchall name for the car's HVAC system? If so, by "AC" you mean your HVAC blower (fan) isn't working...then that would be more descriptive of a failing FSU/FSR (final stage unit/final stage resistor)...which is a pretty common malady with the e39 & X5's HVAC system.

You can do a search here or google, or find videos & DIY & old threads about a failed FSU/FSR. Again, it's pretty common and the e39 & e53 share the same component & HVAC system so if the issues in any threads you read sound similar to your can use either platform as an information guide about this problem.

Good luck.
