Nav Upgrade

I have a 2011 50i and am interested in upgrading to the 2013 nav bit with the 3-D mountains, buildings, etc. My SA tells me I cannot be upgraded such that I get the 3-D graphics, and that I can only get more current maps withy existing graphics. I thought otherwise. Any experience here? Thanx.

hey, the 2014 is out.... so.... be sure it's 2014!! it's called the "North America Premium 2014-1"... it's on my to-do list (I have the 2013-1A now.)
the 3d has to be enabled in one of the settings called perspective or something on that setup screen.

Yes. You're right. I'm thinking of the '14 upgrade. So, is my SA up in the night? Can I get the new graphics in my '11?

yes and yes it should be there. The nice/accurate-shaped 3D buildings are already there in the v2013. However I should say it depends on the city and maybe certain parts (not all parts) of the city. We can be ogling at the 3D buildings and then hit the edge of the city and suddenly the other buildings are flat

How much is your SA screwing you for? If you are CIC, you can do it over the internet for under $100 as I recall

on the low price ones be sure to ask if the price is for the FSC (serial number code/key/activation) or media (data on USB media/stick, download or torrent), or both. We'll actually need both sections to make it work.

^^ The media is free and not copyrighted, as I recall. The FSC code is what they charge for...so once you buy the FSC for $50-60, you just need to torrent the map data or have someone copy and send you one....

I just upgraded my 2014 maps too for $50. Installation was flawless, my questions were answered at a timely manner, almost instant at time. I had to download large files, but it comes with its own program to unzip the file, compile all those files into 1 single file, then copy to a 32GB USB flash drive, took about 45min to install. FSC code is the one that I paid i think.

What I want is to upgrade my '11 with the new 3d graphics, but I keep hearing that it will not work for my '11.

I am sure the media is not free and is copyrighted. Some people have been making bit torrents available via the pirate bay. You can download a zip file from these bit torrents and copy the unzipped files to a USB. When you try to install (via the glovebox USB port), the system will ask you for a FSC code. These can typically be acquired by sending around $50 via PayPal to someone.

Note that a legitimately acquired USB stick with map data and an FSC code costs around $245. That's quite a bit more expensive than pirate bay of course but should the update brick your CIC (which does sometimes happen), it may be easier to have it repaired under warranty.

I have now done the update on 4 cars and have run into zero problems with the $50 option.

Many people have done the "$50 option" without problems, not everyone has been so lucky.
However, it is important to understand that the "$50 option" is not a legal option. It's just the same as downloading movies or PC applications from a pirate bay linked torrent.

Some people prefer to pay for legal access to copyright material, some do not. Those of the former persuasion are going to be paying closer to $250.

I think I haven't nailed this question yet. I understand that I can update the maps. This would be ok, but it's not so much the new maps I am interested in. I want the new 3d graphics, and u am told that my '11 50i cannot run the new 3d graphics, although it will run the updated maps. Make sense?

there is a CIC and a CIC HIGH (NBT). If you have only CIC then it will NOT show 3D graphics (satellite pix) of the map but those model 2012 onwards that have CIC HIGH or NBT will show a 3d graphics map or satellite view whichever you call it AFAIK.

makes sense. i have an '11 and must have the CIC. One strange thing is that the 3d display shows as a "ghost" option in my menu, but it is not selectable. Not sure why the 3d is even a ghost option (ie, shadow, not highlighted and selectable--just making up this terminology)?

I have seen several posts reporting bricked CICs. No idea what happened. One guy had a 2011 X6 which worried me as I have a 2011 X5.

I am sure it's possible to brick a CIC with legitimately acquired USB and key but a warranty claim will be easier (though they have the usual disclaimers, I doubt they would hold up in court).

I am not sure if BMW is still selling the 3 DVD MAP. It is not really expensive as far as just the map but will not install until you to have the FSC code and that's the one that will cost you. FSC code is generated using your vin number and code is unique to that vin number. BMW is selling the map upgrade which is a USB version for $245.
