Rust is the main thing. Check ALL electronics, the usual. These cost more to repair so make sure to use that as leverage for any issues you find.
Welcome!!!! Post pics if ya got em

What year 525? There are plenty of things that you can look for. 116K is pretty low for miles. Is there any record of maintenance or other repairs? Are you a DIYer? I personally love E34's. I haven't owned a 525 due to them being too underpowered for my liking, but I would say that it's a good choice for your first.

There is a lot of info about these cars here in this section. Let us know how it works out

It's a 1992.....carfax is good only things that pop up on car are coolant level indicator (it's full by the way) and tRans program indicator which goes away after. 1 minute, new fuel pump, brakes, and jvc stero

trans program is most likely just low fluid level and/or dirty filter.
but the seller doesnt know that and you wont tell him will you

edit: i say most likely, not definitely... it could be the trans, but it could be a cheap fix.

This is what a seller told me for one of my 540's, but it was not the case. If it need fluid it's for a reason. Maybe the 525's are different, but I'd walk away from this one. There are way too many 525's and other E34s out there to be messing with a slush box like this one.

That really depends on the price, and condition of the car, color........ect. And basically what the OP wants to spend/buy. I know around here i see them often, but they are beat to $#!^, and they think they are worth gold because of the badge on the hood.

Are we talking m20 or m50? M20 the timing belt has to be changed fairly often so I would find out when the last time it was changed. Also no one mentioned the 50mph shimmy in the front suspension, so if possible try and get the car on the highway. The transprogram could be a good bargining point , if it can't be repaired you may be looking at 800-1000 to swap out the old one.

After two different auto 525i's, I really wouldn't buy another one without a stick. They're just kind of screwy when they get up in the miles, and old automatics just can't do what you want them to. Those were the worst automatic transmissions that were ever put in these cars. The M50 is a great engine. It needs more go, but if you know how to work it, it's a great, cheap DD with decent MPGs/fun.

If the coolant level is fine check the wiring around the sensor. It most likely has broken.

Turn your lights on and check for a bulb out, one should be out for that to be on the obc.
