I guess you could try doing a software update via the idrive menus.. perhaps swing by your local dealer and have them assist you?

I had no problem pairing a 5S to the X3 (MY2014)

I'm having the exact same problem with my iPhone 5s and 2011 X3. We are going to the dealership this week to see If they can help. Will post what we hear.

There may be an owner-installable update available that will update the telephone and bluetooth support in your vehicle. Refer to the CD/Multimedia section of your owner's manual, in particular the section on Software Update.

Updates may be downloaded from www.bmw.com/update Have your VIN and a USB drive available. The update (if any) is performed through the USB port in the armrest. Check the software versions that you have against the versions in the update file, and if you're backlevel then do the update. It only takes a few minutes.

You did not tell us what year X3 this is. Or what options. So our experiences may not match yours

02420X3's advice is good general advice: makle sure your SW is up todate.

I had no problem pairing my 5s with my 2014 X3. I have both
