Service Advisor wants to take my car home for the night for extended test drive

my car is in service for the third time (in 6 weeks ) for the same problem, drivetrain malfunction light and now the emissions light.

Today, the service advisor calls me and says they need to do an extended test drive, I say "do it", and ask "how extended? " he says he will take the car home for the night so he can test drive it. I asked him if he had a garage etc and he said "don't worry, I live in a gated community and will park it next to my Mercedes"

I said yes , but 2 minutes later I called him back and said I am not comfortable with this, and I also called the service manager, left a voice mail asking if this is a common practice, that employees take customer cars home for extended test drives.

has this happened to anyone in this forum? now I wonder if sometimes they take my car home and I do not even know about it.

Its pretty common practice, sometimes it takes a long drive for the problem to manifest itself. Other times, after they replace something, they want to make sure it is fix and not have the problem come back a day later. I have let the service dept. drive my car home several times in the past.

It happens. I let my SA take my previous e90 home once without incident. I wouldn't worry about it.

It's a common practice to have the SA or the shop foreman to take the car home for extended test drives.
Especially on noise hunting issues.

The dealer doesn't want to send techs out for hours of joy riding in the name of test drives.

I've let my SA take my cars home overnight several times without any problems. I'd rather have him find the problem than to have to take it in over and to get it right. It's only a car, if something happens, they'll take care of it.

What about this makes you uncomfortable? (Maybe his "gated community" is Rikers Island?

Yes. It is common. My long ago 300 was acting up so service mgr took it home. I simply recorded the mileage before I turned over the keys. If it read more than 50 extra I would have been asking questions as he lived close to dealership!!

Bigger question is why does your SA drive a Mercedes and not a BMW.

I don't have a major problem with it. I've had cars taken home by the service manager when I had Audis. I'd rather take the tech or SA on an test drive myself.

Yes, quite a common practice. Hopefully your SA hasn't seen Ferris Bueller's Day Off:

I can understand why the OP would be weery of letting someone else, a stranger in his eyes, drive his car. You don't know their driving habits, if they are going to beat on your car, smell it up, etc. There's a lot of liability if the car comes back with any type of damage. So I fully understand the concern. We're not handing over the keys to a Toyota Yaris.

That being said, I have a friend who is a SA for a well respected Mercedes dealership in MA. He regularly takes customers cars home to troubleshoot. He is very careful with property that doesn't belong to him and extremely talented at his job. WHen I had a Mercedes in the past, he was the only person I was comfortbale handing over the keys to.

Yes, my car has gone home with the service advisor a couple of times for the tensioner belt squeak problem. It only happened in certain circumstances so the only way to replicate it was to take it home.

Didn't matter, they never were able to fix it, and it still annoys the hell out of me.

Check your state's lemon laws - if you're still under warrantee, you might qualify (given the repetitive nature of the problem).

uhmmm.... this depends on your relationship with your the service dpt/ SM there.

True, this isn't unheard of of, but I am with the OP.
Anything could happen on the way to his home, overnight and back.
Why not ride along and go on a long drive. Drive it show him and let him reproduce it.

The last time my car was in service, one of the techs went to get coffee in it, I had one of my dash cams in my car - this apparently was "test-driving" it to reproduce a problem I had described to the SM.
