Mein Auto: 2014 550xi M Sport
Took Delivery - 2014 550xi M Sport. Quick review and picture heavy post.

So I finally took delivery of my Canadian 2014 550xi M Sport in dark graphite metallic with the mocha nappa interior and fineline anthracite wood trim. This is my first 5er, having driven four different 3ers in the last 12 years. I have posted about my order in several other threads -- for those of you that haven't seen my other posts, the 550 is pretty well optioned, having skipped only the LED lighting (due to it being part of a fairly useless package in Canada and cannot be ordered separately), the B&O sound, the adaptive drive and the night vision.

I was hesitant to pick up a 5 series after I took both a 2013 535 and a 2013 550 for a test drive. Both of the 2013s sort of reminded me of driving my dad's old Cadillacs back in the day. I know that they aren't as floaty as the Caddys were, but having come straight out of 335s with the M Sport package, the test cars just didn't drive the way that I was hoping them to. However, given that I have my first child coming, I knew that I had to get something larger than a 3 and since I don't like SUVs, so the 5 seemed to be the logical choice. I placed my order in late August and convinced myself that I would be happy with the car, especially given that my driving style has become more tame as I age.

I finally picked up the car last week. My delivery was a bit of a mess -- the dealer had the paperwork wrong in all sorts of places, but we were able to correct it at the cost of about an additional hour sitting in the dealership. I have now had the car for a full week and can give some thoughts on the LCI 550.

The first thing that I can comment on is the vastly superior materials that are used in the F10 compared to the E90. The interior is beautiful and I really just want to touch all of the surfaces that are in the car. It is just very well put together and it is clear that there is a much larger emphasis on luxury in the 5 as compared to the 3. The one thing that really bugs me about the interior is the arm rest on the drivers door -- it gets really skinny towards the back and my arm is constantly slipping off of it. I haven't quite figured out where to rest my left arm yet, but I am sure that I will find a solution at some point. Perhaps moving my seat up!

We only have X-Drive 550s in Canada, so even though I ordered my car with the M Sport package, I obviously did not get the 704 suspension. However, I still notice a considerable difference in the feel of the car when comparing it to the 2013 that I tested. It might be in my head, but to me, the car feels a bit more connected to the road and I do not feel that I am floating around, especially when in Sport mode (or Sport+). The car does feel floaty in Eco Pro mode, but I really only put the car into that mode to test it out and I doubt that the car will ever see that mode again. Also, the steering doesn't feel quite as floaty as the 2013 tester that I drove. I know that the steering was changed for 2014, but I read somewhere that the steering did not change in the X-Drive models, so perhaps it is in my head!

There are a few differences in the iDrive system that I will have to get used to. In my 3, I keep the navi screen in split screen mode, usually with the left side being the entertainment info and the right side being the map. I usually leave my radio on Sirius, and in the 3, it would provide me with a list of the channels and, on that same screen, would also provide me with the name of the artist and song that I was listening to. It appears on the 5 that when you are in the screen where you can scroll through Sirius stations it will not also provide you with the name of the artist and song. That is kind of annoying, but I have just reconfigured my setup so that I keep the entertainment info on the right side of the split screen, keep the map in the left side, and use the thumbwheel on the steering wheel to scroll through radio stations. The pro navi is much better than the navi system that is in my E90. Perhaps the F10 navi is also in the F30?

I am still getting used to the size of the car -- it is really much bigger than a 3 and it feels that way. I am quite thankful that the car has all of the cameras that it does. While I still haven't found any use for the cameras located above the wheel wells of the front tires (what are they supposed to be used for?!), the surround camera is genius. Because the surround camera is so good, I haven't had any need to engage the rearview camera yet.

Overall, I am pretty pleased with the car -- more so than I thought I would be -- so that is a very good thing. There are still a number of things that I will need to learn about the car as I continue to drive it so I may post an update to this at some point.

Now to the fun stuff -- I took a number of pictures. Some of them are on a cloudy day and some of them were when it was sunny out. I also tried to take some good shots of the mocha interior. I used a professional DSLR and pro-grade lens to take these shots and I think the colour of the mocha interior is pretty close to dead on for those that are still yet to see it in person. I had ordered the interior sight unseen (only had seen BMW promo pics) and got quite nervous when I started seeing pictures that others were taking making it seem like a rather light brown. While the mocha is not quite as dark as what is seen in the marketing materials, it is, as you will see, much darker than many people's pictures. Apologies in advance if the image quality is not great -- the site says that it only allows each pic to be 500k so I have had to shrink each image quite severely -- my RAW images clock in at approx 80MB per!

Congrats on the new ride! I'm glad to hear you don't find the 2014 with 'base' suspension too floaty, since I'm also making the jump up to the F10 after driving several 3ers in a row. The "old Cadillac" feeling that you mentioned is my biggest concern about the car. The 550 is no doubt a rocket in a straight line, but if it doesn't have the suspension/steering/braking to match, it could easily lack the balanced performance that BMWs are known for.

Beautiful car. I love the new iDrive knob in ceramic. Wish they had that on the M models. Fortunately when I get my 2015 they said they would hook me up with that.

Thanks! What year is your car? The 2014 ordering guide for a Canada only lists the xDrive as being available for the 535 and 550. The 528 can still be ordered in RWD. I believe that in previous years (not sure which ones) the F10 535s and 550s could be ordered in RWD in Canada.

Thanks!

They should be hooking you up with more than ceramic controls when you order a new M5 every year!!

Very nice! And definitely, the best pictures of Mocha we've seen posted -- you must know how to work the camera exposure system . I still have yet to see Mocha in person. Enjoy!

If you like the dynamics of the 3 series, you will be disappointed with the 5. It's a fantastic car, but isolated from road feel. I have had two and went back to the smaller car.

Snarry, you may have me on this one - my 550 is 2011. I have not checked into the availability of rwd in a couple of years. Good to know - I thought it was based on which part of the country you were in because in Alberta dealers have only been brining in xdrive for quite a few years.

Pretty car!

I am so anxious for my space gray 550i xDrive to be rede liveried!

I did the same as you did for options pretty much...I did do the LEDs though.

I also love that you de-badged it. That looks great. Did you do it, or did you have the dealer do it?

Bad question to ask but are you sure that is the anthracite wood trim? I have seen a few of them in real life and they look much darker and have more depth colors, not brownish like yours is. Or does Canada have diff ones then US?

Congrats! I love the color combo. The interior looks more burgundy / wine color than mocha when the sun is not shining on it.

I had the dealer de-badge the rear deck lid for delivery. I have heard that it is pretty simple to do -- apparently a hair dryer and dental floss is all that is necessary -- but I didn't want to be the one to take the paint off the car on day 1!

I believe that here are two different trims with the name anthracite -- the one that I have, which is also referred to as fineline anthracite (code 4CE), and the other being more of a black trim with some grey specks/grain in it (not sure about the code for that or whether it is still available on a 5er).

I noticed the shifter in this pic is black vs silver. Is this because of the sport 8 speed tranny, the Canadian version, or ceramic controls maybe? I like how this looks vs the silver and hopefully my US spec'd 535d comes with it.

It is because of the ceramic controls.
