Anyone went from an X5 to an X3???

I am really struggling with my next X vehicle choice. I simply don't like the looks of the new X5 at all. I like the interior but the outside leaves me totally cold.

Anyone in here went from an E70 to the new X3?

That's kind of a new one. Usually people upgrade into an X5 from the X3. If you don't like the looks of the new one (to me they don't look all that different -- but that's just me I suppose) why not look at something else. Try the new Cayenne, or the ML for example. To really make a change look at the new Jeep GC SRT8. You can tart up an X3 to cost about the same as a mid priced X5, but it will still be an X3. It will be faster and get better mileage though so that is a good thing.

Although I have never owned an X5, I have come very close to pulling the trigger. In December of 2012 I had all but signed on the dotted line for an X5 5.0. I was impressed with the power, fit and finish, and traditional hydraulic steering. However, being so close to the end of production, buying into the "old" style gave me pause, as did the pervasive feeling of "truck-like" weight. Having briefly owned an 07 X3 3.0si - an underwhelming experience - I was prejudiced against anything X3. On a whim, I test drove an X3 - wow - what an eye opener. The interior, while not as luxurious as the X5 is purposefully sporty and high quality. Both the exterior and interior styling suggest a sporty driving experience - and BMW delivered. My X3 3.5 M Sport DHP is fast - indeed faster than a Porsche CayenneS - handles great, carries friends and my German shepherd dog to the mountains in comfort. BTW did I mention - fun - yes my X3 is the BMW of SAVs/SUVs. I now have 12K+ miles on our X3 - still rattle free and fun. At about $60K list - yes you can have a so so X5 or you can have a loaded X3 that is the BMW decathlon champ.

I haven't yet but, like you, I am thinking about it. I had the x5d and that tank served me well for the 3 years that I had it. It had good looks, good handling, good mileage, but IMO the ride was a little too harsh. The x3 is smaller and I would assume that the ride would be a little bit smoother. As for looks, I don't think the x3 will win for best looking SAV, but I think it looks better than the new x5. Again, just my opinion.

As far as "ride" goes -- the X3 has always been sort of a "hard rider" although that has improved somewhat since the '04 "buckboard" days when it was roundly panned by the automotive scribes. The X5 should be a much smoother ride, especially if you opt for the adaptive drive option.

I did not see much difference in X5 and X3 ride quality though X5 was tiny bit quieter. But there are many pluses with X3 though.
It is likely that we would justify our Rides and that's why we bought
them.

My wife had been driving an Acura MDX for almost ten years and when we decided to get her a new car, we looked at and test drove twelve different vehicles. The 2014 X5 was at the top of the list but the selection available at the local dealer was slim with most being SDrive and not XDrive. We've got two large dogs and really thought we needed something larger than an X3, but took it for a test drive anyway and really liked the way it drove. We decided that since our kids are grown we could probably make it work with something a little smaller. It's been almost four weeks now and after a trip with our dogs and our luggage for six days, we know we made the right decision.

thank you guys I appreciated all your responses. I just told my SA to price a x3 35i and an x5 35i and 35d with the options I wanted (adaptive suspension on BMWs for me is a must btw after my DHP equipped 335i has given me so much flexibility and driving pleasure). I am going to take the wife (its going to be her and my daughter's car-she just started driving) for a test drive in the X3. She has had an X5 since 2003 the current one being her 4th and she really doesn't want to look at a Cayenne or anything American. Personally I wish she would consider the MDX. But if the X3 drives like some of you guys are saying I think this would be a terrific choice for us since the smaller size SUV would be easier for her to manage.

Again thank you for all your responses.

Can you find an X3 with DHP to test drive?

If the new X3's are the same as when we bought our 2011 F25, DHP is the only suspension upgrade available. We have it and really like it, but never compared it to a non-DHP X3.

The ride quality on our 2011 X3 is significantly better than our former 2006 X3.

Thanks
Bruce

I am going to try Bruce this Saturday. I have DHP on my 335i and LOVE IT. Even if I don't find one to test drive and end up going with the X3 DHP will be the first option I will check.

I did go from an E70 X5 2007 4.8L to the F25 X5 2013 M Sport. Excellent choice. I was looking for something less thirsty but with still a good kick. I only saw the new X5 in photos and I am meh on it. I can't wait to see it in person.

Cheers.

Wife has an 11 x5d and we have an x335i being built....for us, as the kids are gone, we downsized a bit...wife wanted an x5, i didnt want to spend the xtra $'s for a large vehicle that wasnt "needed"....may have stayed with the x5d if the 14 d was available, but didnt want to wait for it to hit dealers....

Good evening guys. Couldn't make it to the dealership today. Thanksgiving is around the corner so we had to do some shopping today. Interesting part of the day was as I took the kids to ballet, one of the parents has a 2013 X3 2.8i. I check it out and talking to him he loves it. he came from a much larger SUV, a Tahoe. He said he doesn't miss it at all.

Anyway I got to get to a dealer and test drive the X3. March is the end of my lease for my current X5. One question for you guys that have. Can 3 people comfortably seat in the back? How is the luggage space? It seem a little small to me when it came to luggage space.

Anyone went from an X5 to an X3???

Three kids sitting in the back is fine. 2 adults and kid in the middle is fine. 3regular size adults in the back would be tight. I would say trunk space is decent for a road trip for 4 adults 1 child and with 4 decent size luggage. I figure if I need even more trunk space then I'm getting a Thule roof rack and cargo bin on top.

Your friend coming from the Tahoe does not miss it now -- however wait until he has to haul some "stuff" -- then its a different story! I miss my old Tahoe about once or twice a week.

True but the again you would probably be saying the same thing if you went from a Tahoe to an X5 .

Wind - Right, but then when I bought my X3 the X5's had about the same (actually slightly smaller) cargo area. It might have just seemed that way because they were so much "plusher" than my Spartan-like X3 though. I still like the Tahoe, even more now when they get much better mileage than I got -- almost the same as my X3 in real world driving. No comparison to the BMW on handling, braking, steering however -- but for utility and a great ride the bow tie is hard to beat and that is why I like them.

Uncle I agree I would love to get an MDX or a Denali for the family, probably cheaper too. But what I did wrong was turn my wife on to BMWs almost 15 years ago and that was that. She doesn't even want to hear or test drive another brand. So lesson for the rest of you keep the wife/girlfriend in the dark..

Now for the new X5 I may still go that route if its more practical to my needs. But my needs have really changed since my daughter will also be driving this car. I just think a smaller X3 will suit her better, keep the wife happy and still have enough room to put luggage when we go away on weekend trips.

Will do, but in fairness, it's the wifes car...i drvie the s4 or use my truck when i need to move lots of stuff so we dont need to rely on the SUV....but we do have family trips and the x is much more comfortable for long trips so it'll get a test or two vs the x5 trips.

Lol on the wife comment....tried to get her to look at other cars....could only get her to look at q5 and x5 / x3 - she's a german car loving nightmare now!

Hahaha. Hey we are not married to the same woman are we?

In all seriousness I love to hear your opinion because I am on the fence with this choice. We have had X5s since 2003, with the current one being our 4th. I hate to go X3 without some opinions out there. I appreciated.

Anyone go from x5 to x3

I just turned in my X5 (E70) for a loaded 2014 X3 3.5 M sport pkg, DHP. Loved my X5 but my kids are through with college and I did not need as big a hauler. The X3 fit the bill because it still has ample cargo space, handles great and is EASIER to park and maneuver in the high rise metropolis of downtown Chicago! The X5 rode a little heavier and had a cabin that tempered road noise a tad better. I get better gas mileage now and the exhaust rumble in sport mode is a hoot! You stated you are sour on the exterior look of the new F15-which I like
pictorially (have not seen one in reality yet) so opt for an E70 new or used if you need the largesse of the X5 over X3. Hope this helps you.

I also recently went from a 2011 E70 X5 35i to a 2014 X3 35i (had it since May) - it is a loaded M-sport. The X5 had a third row which was pretty much useless, otherwise when I went through all the interior dimensions, the front and back seats were very close, the cargo area is about 30% smaller but if I need a lot of space I put the bin on the roof. I really like driving the X3, it handles and better and just feels more nimble - goes like stink too with a JB4 on it. New X5 has a few nice new options available, was going to wait for the new X5, but quite happy with the X3 and really don't miss the extra space. The X3 is also lower to the ground and much easier to get in and out of. Ultimately like others have said, the X5 if the way to go if you really need the extra space, otherwise you really are not giving anything much up going with the X3!
