'98 328i - Turbo Install

Greetings All,
I have a '98 328i I bought at an auction for $1500. It has 150k miles. Body was rough, but I've slowly been getting it straightened back out. I overhauled the entire suspension and have been replacing damaged front and rear panels. I bought some used 17" M3 wheels and put on new tires. The handling is back to nearly new condition.
The good news is the interior, engine and 5-speed manual tranny are all in very good condition. Compression is good and it uses no oil.
I will be installing a turbo or supercharger. I really don't want to mess with the bottom end and would be happy with an end result of 400 whp. It will still be my daily runner once completed. I have a fully outfitted shop, including a TIG welder, and would feel comfortable doing any work myself.
Any and all suggestions and ideas as to installing a forced induction system would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Rod

Hey Rod, welcome!

400whp is pretty ambitious, looking forward to seeing your choices. You may do better trading off a higher peak for a broader power band, but that's a personal choice.

Where about in CA are you?

Ambitious yes, but hopefully doable?
Northern CA, but the car will soon be registered in Oregon in an area with no emissions testing or inspections.

Yes doaable. On the stock 2.8L bottom end you are going to need a good amount of intercooled boost, more aggressive cams (Run S52 cams and call it a day) and most importantly a good tune.

Thanks Jakobie.
Any hope at all of getting the required boost with an SC rather than a turbo? I'm thinking not.

Not on the 2.8, and it would be hard even with a 3.0 or 3.2. Your are better off doing a good turbo setup with a bit of head work.

Thanks Jakobie.
That's what I figured. Guess I'll either choose lower power with an SC or start saving my centavos for the turbo install. I either have the tools/machines/capabilities or have free access to what I will need to do the complete turbo, head and exhaust work on the turbo install myself. This should save me some cash.
