Speaker opinions

I almost feel bad starting a new thread to ask this question but I know there are people on here who have way more experience with E39 speakers than I do (which is none) and I want to make the right decision the first time.

I'm currently in the market for new speakers in the front, after some research I've narrowed it down to these.

Also, it should be noted that I'm not exactly looking to upgrade the amp right now but I am open to it. I also have a non DSP equipped car.

Here's what I am leaning towards but I'm also open to other recommendations.

http://www.amazon.com/dp/B004XCCA86/...I2BZYF08F9A62I

http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00BF6HX9E/...I1AUJ10WDCUGHI

http://www.amazon.com/dp/B002BZE36E/...=IQDVFWNOFC8MG

And of course, BimmerFest's recommendation whatever that may be.

Skip the Fosgate and the Infinity. Those are two way speakers. You need a component speaker to replace the original speakers. As to quality, that is in the ear of the beholder. As to price, you get what you play for.

Sounds like you know your stuff! What are you running stereo wise?

I use the Boston Acoustics so I guess I'm partial to them. They seem to be efficient enough to work with the stock amp as well as an upgraded one if you so choose to go in that direction.

Not partial to the new MB Quart speakers. The old ones were better.

They're made by Maxxsonic now correct? Compared to the average price of component speakers they are about 1/3 the price...I'd really like to know why because they seem like a steal and they consistently get top reviews.

After doing some research on the differences between component and two-way speakers I have pretty much scratched all my original options.

These Polks seem nice. Price isn't horrible either.

The Bostons recommended by AnotherGeezer are right in the middle price wise.

Rockford Fosgates. Price is a bit higher though.

And on the low end are these low cost (yet well reviewed) Kenwoods. Stay away from like the plague?

Who would've thought this would be so hard!

Sometime back, I replaced all 12 DSP speakers with MB Quart components. Huge improvement.

Nearly anything is better than the stock. When I did mine, I originally went with Infinity components in the front doors and Kenwood coaxials on the rear deck mated to a Blaupunkt armrest subwoofer. Original head unit and amp. Replacing the rear deck speakers was a waste. When I totaled that car, I put Blaupunkt components in the front and moved the subwoofer. Both the component speakers are good but the Infinity's had better definition. The subwoofer is essential as the mid lows are non existent on the OEM system. Bottom line, I don't listen critically in my car. Way too much road noise. And my source is MP3 (iPod). So there's no need for a head unit, large amp or subwoofer. Just my 0.02 on car audio.

The old good MB Quarts aren't available anymore.
I have the Boston Acoustic SC50's too. Sounds great even with the OEM amp. You can play them louder with less distortion if you replace the amp. After I did the speakers I put a JL Audio XD400/4 amp in.

I am an installer at a local shop, and my escalade is sponsored by a bigger shop in Louisville.

The only thing worth using that has been mentioned are the Boston Acoustics, the new Fosgate's blow and the MB quart are Walmart quality at best.

These are quite abit better. I live by the buy once cry once way of life.

Can't go wrong with those Boston, it's unfortunate that they stopped making products.

Don't know about current MB Quarts but I installed my 12 Reference Series Component Speakers back in 2002 when they were still made in Germany.

I'm sure, like everything else, current speakers are made in China.

They are now made by the manufactures of power acoustik..... Total garbage now.

It seems like all mainstream brands have taken a downward turn, some more than others

Looking forward to viewing the pics of your install. I'm looking into upgrading myself. Dumb question, are the tweeters on the Rainbow SLX 230's an exact fit with the stock ones or is there modifications needed?

Has anyone tried just adding an amp to push the oem speakers, like the referenced JL Audio? From what I'm gathering the oem amp is severely underpowered and it's just kind of assumed the speakers are garbage (which they might be).

The OEM speakers can't take the additional power from a better amp.
Might sound a bit better until you start cranking them.

I replaced the speakers first and was using the OEM non-DSP amp with them. The sound quality improvement was very noticeable at low and moderate levels. However when you cranked it up the OEM amp couldn't keep up and would distort which is the reason for the new amp and using the crossovers that came with the SC50's.

Re: Speaker opinions

I used Polk component speakers on my other car and very happy with them, but I would give Focal a try if I were to upgrade my e39 stock speakers, their floor standing home speakers are magnificent, blow out your mind.

I was thinking of buying the Bavauto speakers for the front, but I see they've changed the package to include the rears. I've totally gutted the dsp/nav system in my car and have a nice powered system, time for speakers. Don't need or want rear speakers, especially the tweeter just behind my ear drives me crazy. At any rate, which speakers will fit in the existing mid box, and tweeter high on the door? Don't really want to build a box, although I can adapt the driver mounting if necessary.
