Yes, it is possible, but the changer can't play them. Just the head unit.

I think it's not possible in 04' but possible in 05'. 06' it works from the factory and no changer required.

The EYE OPENER BATT REPLACEMENT

(2004 525i) This is something that I cannot understand of WHY these cars HAVE to be REGISTERED when replacing a simplistic damn battery as opposed to OTHER cars. I bought a battery from NAPA ($180.00) and had the stealership change it out and THEY charged me ($188.00) to do the "5 minute" battery exchange and of course when it was time to pay up, they said "it had to be registered" to the cars computer. WTF?!?!?! Explaining that the computer has to be "erased" from the current battery and "reprogramed" to the new battery. WTF kind of german engineering is THIS? Pure BULL****! Not too happy with my (1st) BMW. How stupid...... My 2005 Honda Accord that I kicked to the curb is WAY better. Plus it does not have the STUPID "I-DRIVE". Sorry, but that's how I feel.....

My 06 doesn't have this. The changer is not required for it, my understanding is they do it when they code in the changer.

From what I have gathered it needs to be registered so the computer can properly charge it, vs over or under charging due to battery age/capacity. The car will do fine without it. The battery may or may not last as long as it could. I'm sorry you feel this way and of course everyone is entitled to their opinion.

+1 Agreed. Also there is a way around getting the battery registered. You can use a transfer tool that essentially keeps the computer running at all times during the battery exchange. Its as if the battery never reset or was even removed from the car. Keeps all your settings and no need to register. I did this to mine not 2 weeks ago

But your car doesn't know you have a new battery and not to overcharge it. It thinks you are still on your old battery.

Exactly. That method does nothing for telling the computer it has a new battery. The entire point is so that it DOES know you have a new battery, not the other way around.

The higher end INPA cable is what, $99? + 5 minutes of coding and you can do it yourself

I hate dealerships and I've never even been to one

Wow Dont I feel stupid. I was just doing what the battery shop told me to do. Is it too late for me to register the new battery? Hopefully I didnt do any harm yet. My battery is 2 weeks old btw

I have an 06 and no changer an I can play mp3 CDs. However, I do have the "changer ready" option.

Yes, my '07 has the option "Provisions for BMW 6 CD changer", but no CD changer is actually installed. My in-dash CD does play MP3s.

Now, does the in-dash DVD play MP3s? I see the greyed-out "DVD" option in the iDrive entertainment menu. This would be useful as my entire collection would fit on just a few DVDs ...

Not sure, I really want to do a cic retrofit, but seeing in your retrofit thread what all it takes, I might just settle for coding for mp3 playback. Dont think its possible though.

I THINK the late model changes can indeed play MP3's, and I am sure later MASK's and I believe all CCC's can play them

I also learned new batteries must be registered.

Also learned:
- You can change the oil filter from the top of the engine bay.
- The steering wheel sometimes needs reset for it to go all the way up after stopping, e.g. move it all the way out, in, up and down and then re-positions to desired position.
- Electronics in the bottom of the trunk should be manually re-positioned to the sides in order to avoid upwards of $15K in replacement electronics.
- I can set the cruise control at 100mph and expect a worry free, smooth ride.
- The windshield washer fluid reservoir is known for leaking--nothing some minor maintenance can't fix.
- That object hanging from the roof in the middle is a interior motion sensor?

Yup, MP3 playback off the DVD works in my 2007 530i .

In case anyone wants to know, I burned the data DVD using xfburn in Linux.

This is correct. The changer doesn't have the firmware to be capable of playing them.

My 06 CCC isn't capable. It can be coded for it yes. I think the standard changed on the CIC units, along with adding the usb and aux ports. Which sadly I don't have either.

How can it be coded if it isn't capable

i.e. it's capable, just isn't allowed to by default

AUX port is a very easy add-on. You should consider adding it

The head unit is capable. The changer is just that, a slot changer/reader which isn't. I don't know this positively but I have done heavy research as this what my intention, to the point of purchasing the changer only to find this out.

I would love the aux port but iffy about pulling my baby apart! :-) I have been debating about having the dealership do it, they wanted $250 for cable, installation and coding. Sadly, I don't have an indy in my area I trust.

Gotcha--yeah some of the plastic parts can be a little iffy on getting them out in one piece if they haven't been removed in a while. The wood trim across the dash is also tough to get started without chipping any corners or anything

I hate to say it, but if they'd come down to more like $200 I'd probably let them do it
