Ah, yes, the SX4. I was struggling to come up with that name... I was getting close, though. We do have those in the states, and the last few generations were fairly well received if I recall correctly. I never would've guessed that it had some Italian blood in it, however.

Wiki says she's the love child of Fiat and Suzuki.
Quote:

The Suzuki SX4 is a compact car developed jointly by Japanese automaker Suzuki and Italian automaker Fiat. In some European markets the SX4 is sold as the Fiat Sedici, and in some Asian markets as the Maruti Suzuki SX4. It was designed by Giorgetto Giugiaro's Italdesign Giugiaro studio and has been produced since 2006.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SX4

I wouldn't have remotely considered one without the overwhelmingly positive reviews in www.edmonds.com, and without having owned my Suzuki bike, knowing how mechanically well built she is. Either or, under $5k, 2006, AWD, manual, ~38 mpg highway, 40,000 miles...

I think she's a great deal.

That's the awesome part. Can't complain about any of those numbers. When you're done DDing it strip the interior out and boom, dedicated rallyx car.

I took my better-half to test drive Kia Optimas on Saturday morning. We drove a '12 SX Turbo Premium/Tech with 31k miles on it, a brand new '14 and a "new" '13 demo with 1600 miles on it.

I was completely surprised by how much I liked the car. We sat in an A3 after sitting in one and everything in the Audi felt like crap by comparison. It honestly feels like an A4 or 3-series if you don't think about the drive wheels.

Incredibly comfortable seats, every possible high-tech option you never knew you needed. It has about 9 different stability systems, 7 airbags, blind spot monitoring, backup camera, back up sensors, keyless entry, auto-folding mirrors, voice control, navigation, etc.

It makes 270-something horsepower out of a 2.0T. It's sneaky fast and rides like a bank vault. It doesn't *feel* that fast when you roll into the throttle, then you look down and you're doing 75 in a 45 all of a sudden. The '14 has 3 different driving modes, the most aggressive of which seems to triple the steering ratio and make the car feel exceedingly nervous for when you want to dive through corners or change lanes abruptly, then you can kick it back into Eco and it settles down and feels like a luxo-sedan.

Since the '14 refresh just came out and Kia finanical is subsidizing them pretty heavily, we're seriously considering a lease on a '14. I need to keep doing research, but with the cheap rates and guaranteed residual value, we could pay considerably less money during the first three years we had it, then purchase the car at the end of the lease, and the total cost would be quite a bit lower than buying a new one outright.

I need to keep doing research to see if additional cost for the '14 would really be worth it for us (i.e. determining the actual residual values so I can add everything up), otherwise we'll look to pick up an '11 or '12 model with 25-30k miles on it in the low $20k range.

EDIT: Oh, things I didn't like so it's not just a blind worship review. The engine note sounds tinny and strained at full throttle, more so on the '12 and '13. This is to be expected with a little 4 banger, but somehow my GTI and Jake's ST manage to have reasonably pleasant exhaust notes while still being quiet cars. The automatic was an automatic and that sort of sucks. It's very smooth, shifts are firm and quick, and it's quite aggressive in its shift points, but it's best to just leave it in "D." The paddles have a noticeable delay, especially after getting out of the DSG GTI. I haven't driven the latest BMW and Audi automatics so I can't really compare it to those, but for a car that otherwise felt like an honest to god sports sedan, the transmission was definitely the weak point.

Joey does this mean you and the Better half will be disposing of the 540?

Supposed to bring the Subaru back today, but they don't have any loaner cars available. So, now I have to wait until 3:30, call back, and see if they have anything. Otherwise, I will have to drop it off at 7pm. Ugh. This is not cool.

Yes, the 540i will go up for sale if/when we do this. She would be thrilled if it didn't go far from home so she knew it continued to live a good life, so if anyone on here or in our car club wanted to buy it we could work out a fair price.

Yeah, that is a great deal. It's actually a pretty compelling little car. With studded snow tires, I bet it's a lot of fun.

Fukurcoldfront.

30* this morning. Likewise yesterday. Hit 27* last night, this is ridiculous.

A few pics from both days attached, including a question - what's the best tool to use to get rid of ice without scratching the windshield??? I spent forever this morning with a squeegee, to miserable results.

Oh, and the sidewalk was awesome. That's all ice. At least every other house left their sprinklers on for this and as a result have iced their sidewalks and driveways. Brilliant.

And I had to sneak this one in.

You are from California, aren't you... You need a window scraper. They make them specifically for scraping ice off of car windows, and they'll make quick work of that ice. You can usually buy them at any gas station or auto parts store, although they may not be as widely available in CA. That said, I think there are plenty of people in CA who go up into the mountains, so stores should probably carry them.

We've been getting down into the upper teens at night here in Seattle, which is the coldest weather we've had on record in years. Lots of pipes are freezing and bursting, but fortunately, none of ours have... One perk: next year's gardening season will be better, as this hard freeze kills all the snails & slugs. Don't know how much that's going to affect all the birds who eat them, though.

Adorable randies chad!

I find these work well for ice on the car

These can be found in the trunk/backseat of EVERY car in New England. I keep one in each car, plus one in the garage. If the car is already outside, I'm not opening the door to get the brush.

I actually went to three gas stations and a Walgreen's and no one carried anything for it at all. So, alas, I humbly seek the wisdom of OT.

Edit, Patrick, what's it called so I can order it online? Looks effective. The plastic doesn't scratch the windshield?

1.) That's frost, not ice. There's a difference.

2.) You are seriously out of your element aren't you? It's called a windshield scraper. Works wonders.

You also could've just turned the car on and let the defroster run for 10 minutes to clear it all up.

3.) This is ice.

I wish I had gotten a pic of the side of the car, it was completely encased in ice when I first went out to it this morning. At least I could get the door open to start it, sometimes you have to chisel the door and handle out before you can even get it open.

Sounds like we're getting more of it tomorrow, 2-5" projected throughout the day.

4.) Your kids are huge!

Someone on the Focus ST Facebook page posted this. They worked until 1 AM last night, and managed this photo before breaking all the ice off of their car:

Yes. '00, Orient Blue/Dove Gray, Steptronic, Sport Package, Premium Package, Cold Weather Package. Only option it doesn't have is Nav. I believe it currently has 139k. Leaks coolant which I will fix before selling it, the front end is wobbly and it leaks a bit of oil which I will not fix before selling it.

You're officially the first on my list of people to call when it's real, probably looking at February-March.

1. The stuff on my roof and lawn was frost. I've dealt with frost before on the Bay Area. This was different. Much thicker, more solid, and harder to remove.

2. Yes, completely. I readily admit that. I did at least know to wrap my pipes and turn off my sprinklers though.

I'm looking more for a 1-minute solution, not 10.

3. That looks more like a punishment from Satan, not a normal occurrence of weather.

4. Tell me about it! We just hit 2.5 years.

Edit, Ken, won't hot water on a 30* windshield just give me a huge crack?

Chad, the plastic window scrapers won't scratch your windows at all. I actually prefer the scrapers with metal edges, but they're getting harder to find it seems.
