Engine swap e30

Hey guys I own a e30 318i 86 model, I was just wondering if anyone could tell me if there is a more powerful engine that will be a bolt in swap for this car ?

M30B35 swap. You need the trans, new mounts, wiring harness and ecu. It took me about 3 days for all of it.

As I've said the M30 swap does sound like an attractive swap, and BTW, is there a reason you specify the B35 over the B34? The latter is supposedly a more advanced engine but I have no direct experience with either, other than driving two 535is (early 90s vintage) that I think had that engine.

He did mention 'bolt in swap' and I'm wondering if the M20B25 would be an all around easier job. Would still be a significant power gain over the 4 banger, except for maybe finding an M3 4 banger and I gather that the stock 6 has about the same or better torque than that engine anyway.

Not giving you a hard time but the topic of putting the 325 6 cylinder - the M20 for the E30s, into a 318 has been discussed here and elsewhere. You'll get more info quicker, at least on that specific route if you do a search. Here are the Google results for such a search:

Get an M42 motor...goes in easy and much more economical than a six cylinder.

from what ive seen, the m3 4 banger has better hp, at 193 hp compared to 168 from the m20, but the m20 has alot better torque at at almost 170 ft lbs compared to the m3 140 ish ft lbs. m20=drift m3= speed. how i view it.

toque and hp are the same thing.

But yeah the s14 is a great motor if you have 10K to spend.

or you could do an M50 swap and have the same power lbeit in a heavier engine. or mod the M20 ad make the same or more power or spend 2K and do a M60 swap and make 280hp.

or do the S52 swap

Tones of options

You will need to replace the wiring loom and the ECU and AFM.

I have the M40 and it is a fine engine but it has a cambelt...M42 uses a chain and has 16 valves.

Thats why in most dyno graphs the hp and tq curves cross at 5252

that being said every engine has its own character and th e s14 like most 4 cylinders is designed to rev and has peaky power. inlin 6s have the advantage of having a broader more useable powerband because hey have 2 extra cylinders and extra displacement. The added weight of the extra pistons and rods forces you to lower the engine speed to keep vibrations at a minimum. That said you can make a I6 rev and there is no greater sound imaginable than a high rpm I6

Re: Engine swap e30

I will actually agree with that, but ive always viewed supra/gtrs to be the high revving straigh sixes. My m20 redlines at 6500 + or - a few.
I love the sound my motor makes as the rpms dive from 4k to 6200 when i step on it.
