What is in the stock shifter handle?

I was doing a complete refurb of the bushings on the transmission 5-speed Getrag, and today I put the shifter handle in an ultrasonic bath to clean it up and it took off one of the two round silver tape items that cover a hole that is in the sifter handle 'stalk'.
I know it is a tube with rubber in the 'tube' for less vibrations but does anyone know what is in the upper part that is sealed with the tape pieces?
I cleaned them up and it just looks like a small rod in the center (looking inside the handle) but I don't know why the tape?
Anyone ever wonder that? Does the aftermarket have this?
My T-56 6-speed in my Monte Carlo (I took it out of a 1994 Fbody) had a rubber-mounted shift lever and when I replaced it with a Hurst shifter it was solid.
So, any thoughts why the tape?
My cars: 2001 325i w/5-speed. Mostly stock. I also have a 1988 Monte Carlo SS with 406 cid, TPI and 6-speed when I want to blast the rice into the weeds.

Are you talking about the shift knob with the shift pattern on it? If there's tape inside, perhaps the previous owner did that because the knob was pulling off the shifter rod. It's pressure fit and sometimes as they age, they don't stay fit. Tape is not original equipment.
