Alarms were not standard equipment on the E46, so it`s quite possible you have an aftermarket unit. Anything from BMW was a dealer-installed option, so you might want to check with a dealer.

Does the owners manual for the car not have instructions on alarm?

I bought my car new and my BMW alarm new and installed it myself. Never have I seen a manual for the alarm. There was only a single sheet install set of instructions. DIY's online were more detailed.

Might as well put it out there:

Alarm system*
The concept
The vehicle alarm system responds:
>When a door, the hood or the luggage
compartment lid is opened
>To movement inside the vehicle
interior motion sensor
>To variations in the vehicle's tilt angle
such as those occurring during
attempts to steal the wheels or tow
the vehicle tilt alarm sensor
>To interruption of battery voltage.
The system responds to unauthorized
vehicle entry and attempted theft by
simultaneously activating the following:
>The acoustic alarm sounds for
30 seconds
>The hazard warning flashers are activated
for approx. five minutes
>The high beams flash on and off in
rhythm with the hazard warning flashers.
To arm and disarm the alarm
system
When the vehicle is locked or unlocked
via the driver's door lock or with the
remote control, the alarm system is also
simultaneously armed or disarmed.
You can have different acknowledgment
signals set to confirm
arming and disarming.<
You can also open the luggage compartment
lid when the system is armed
by pressing the remote control button,
refer to page 32. The lid is once again
secured when it is closed.
Extended pressure on the button sets
off the alarm Panic mode, refer to
page 32.

But hardly what I consider a manual for the alarm system. This stuff is pretty intuitive.
And this info leaves out some of the finer points.
Geez I have issues with most of the dumb clots who write instruction manuals.

thanks a lot for detailed info- I am practicing it today It looks easy but there are some small details like disarming it when towed , using the panic button so
I agree the instructions should be better in the manual for 330 ci
I believe I do not have interior motion sensor- can this be installed on a convertible and what part do I need?

I have a coupe so I've never focused on a vert.
But I believe there is a motion sensor option for that. Might require some modification for installation. Good luck in searching for info. I have seen it posted somewhere here or on e46fanatics.com
