Here are some numbers for you guys:
  • Since his car got spanked by an autotragic 323i, we figured his car is producing ~140 WHP.
  • With properly operating cats, his car should make closer to 200 WHP.
  • With headers, a typical power gain of anywhere from 12-15 WHP is achieved.
  • Having headers coupled with the intake, I'm pretty certain the gains will be closer to 18 to 20 WHP.
  • He said something to me about getting the Stage 2 VAC Motorsports head. The Stage 2 (supposedly) makes around 20 WHP (without cams) with the benefit of changing the curve of the powerband entirely.
  • If he's going to upgrade the cylinder head, I'm going to assume he's going to put in some hotter cams. I figure they're probably good for another 10 WHP.
  • With all of this, he's definitely going to need a custom tune. I'm going to say it's probably good for 12 to 15 WHP, especially with everything else bolted on.

Let's review.

200 WHP = Normal ZHP.
+18 for intake and headers.
+20 for Stage 2 cylinder head.
+10 for cams.
+12 for custom tune.

Grand total?

260 WHP.

And that's on the low end.

Also, I just ordered something that will pair nicely with this up and coming monster of a ZHP. It should be here sometime this week, so I'll keep you posted.

The VAC head is a dream for now. Maybe if my tax check is big this year, but honestly, it always gets eaten up by other things family related. And this year almost HAS to be the year I need a new clutch (203k miles on the original clutch, it can't last forever). That will eat up a chunk.

But I do plan on a tune to go with the headers. Paired with the 3.46 diff, it should be a nice increase.

Unfortunately, improvements & gains are not cumulative (ie, they don`t get "added up") in The Real World. So, that package which on paper looks like it should give you a 60 HP jump, will probably yield around 35 or 40 RWHP....
No voodoo involved here, that`s just the way it crumbles....

The only variable was a set of Schrick 264/248 cams.

Toss on that VAC Motorsports head with a custom tune, and I'm pretty sure it will be touching the 250 WHP mark. Granted, this guy had lightweight wheels and an 8 lb. flywheel...

Well, I just hope I gain the 60+hp back I lost from only having exhaust on one bank of cylinders.

Yesterday I drove the car for a few miles and it was sputtering and wouldn't idle. Then I stopped in my driveway and could hear something banging around from my tail pipes.

Had a similar issue before I removed my cats. It honestly does sound like you've got one that's completely destroyed lol.

My money is on a very sick/damaged cat....

Well, we have 2 different situations here. Smolck`s main objective is to get his car running normally again. If improved power output comes out of the deal, so much the better.

Looks like that other guy spent around $3000 to get another 20 or so RWHP over a typical stock ZHP, so, I don`t see any great bargains here, just another typical "Quest for BMW Power" scenario....

No matter HOW you shake it out, these cars are not exactly cheap to fool around with....

Oh, believe me when I say I know (the Stage 2 VAC Motorsports head I keep talking about is $2,500 alone!). It takes a full engine rebuild to get significant NA power. I'm just saying the possibilities are out there.

I know smolck will enjoy the renewed power (plus the little extra!), so it is just a big benefit.

Re: Let`s get Smolck headers for Christmas

Hey guys,

Fast Bob sent me the donations you guys sent. I'm floored by your generous donations.

I'll be ordering headers shortly, along with fasteners and such. Look for a DIY this weekend hopefully.

I'm excited to get my car running right again. Especially since I've seemingly cured my oil consumption issue.

Thanks and Merry Christmas!
