Competition Package Wheels (Style 601M)

In the M5 brochure it states that the 601M wheels are forged but on another board someone confirmed through BMWNA that they are not forged.
Also, this makes sense because the 601Ms are somewhat heavier than the 343Ms. Makes zero sense.

Priced both through BMW parts department and the the 343Ms are approximately $1,200 each (601Ms are approximately $800 each). Again, makes no sense why BMW would put seemingly inferior wheels as part of CP.

I understand that some cast wheels can be as good as some forged wheels in many instances but the fact that the CP wheel offering adds weight is a little hard to understand.

I guess another 20 some odd pounds doesn't really make a difference with an already overweight M5.

Also I believe the base 19s weigh a couple kgs more than the 343Ms. The stock 19s are cast wheels.

I really just wanted the base 19s but apparently they cannot be had with CP. I'm still trying to confirm.

You should be able to have 19's with the Competition Pack, it's only the Carbon Ceramic Brakes that require 20's.

I was told the 601M's were forged by BMW, but they 'look' cast to me.

Thanks for the reply Richard. I was told today by BMW NA that 1) the 601s are cast and 2) the 19" base wheels cannot be had with the Competition Package (they couldn't say why however).

I don't think there is a technical reason, but there may be some ordering system limitation.

Just to let you know, I am currently awaiting investigation of one of my 601Ms on which I discovered cracks on two adjacent spokes, they have only been driven for about 200 miles due to swapping to winter wheels.

I also made it clear when ordering the car that ordering the 601Ms was dependent on them being forged as I was told, so I will be requesting that they be exchanged for 343Ms which are forged.

Hi Richard, I called BBS and they told me that they need all the numbers from the back of the wheel and that they would be able to provide me with information regarding how they were manufactured. Problem is that I don't have this information.
Can you give me all the numbers from the back of your wheel?

Competition Package Wheels (Style 601M)

Per BBS USA:
343M Forged BBS
345M Pressure Cast BBS
601M Did not recognize any of the numbers on the back of the wheel, likely not manufactured by BBS.

So is it confirmed that 601M wheels are not forged? I will be upset to if it were true

Confirmed through BMW NA customer care, weight differential (343Ms weigh something like 5.5lbs less per wheel) and price differential (343Ms are approximately $1200 each through BMW parts versus approximately $800 for 601Ms).

Unthinkable why BMW would put inferior wheel in CP.

I am not an expert on the topic of wheels and performance just using common sense.

I would love if some experts would comment, or if we got some sort of rationale from BMW.
