Exclamation Ralf out for 3 months

link here

This will certainly fuel the replacement driver rumors. Will they use Gene for the rest of the season or do something more radical?

Gené to Replace Injured Schumacher in France

Gené to Replace Injured Schumacher in France
06/30/2004

Oxford, June 30, 2004. The BMW WilliamsF1 Team confirmed that the team's official test and reserve driver, Marc Gené, would replace Ralf Schumacher at this weekend's French Grand Prix at Magny-Cours.
After a high speed accident at Indianapolis ten days ago, doctors have confirmed that Ralf Schumacher has sustained two fractures in his spinal column, and will require a recovery period of up to twelve weeks. It is not clear when Ralf will be fit to race again.

In the light of yesterday's medical diagnosis, future decisions regarding driver nominations will be taken at a later date.

Marc Gené, veteran of 34 GP starts has raced at Magny-Cours twice previously, and has completed13,000km of testing in the FW26 so far this season. "It is a shame that opportunities only come along when one of my colleagues has endured some kind of misadventure, but it is my job to make the best of such circumstances and ensure the team is not compromised by Ralf's absence. I have raced at Magny-Cours before, and I have clocked up thousands of kilometres in the FW26, so hopefully this will provide the basis for a good performance in France this weekend.

Frank Williams commented, "I wish Ralf well for a full recovery, and I hope to see him back racing before the end of the season. In the meantime, we are fortunate to have a driver of Marc's calibre to fill the void."

BMW Motorsport Director, Mario Theissen said, "Of course we are very sorry for Ralf. Prior to his accident in Indianapolis, he had his best race of the season in Montréal. For the second half of the season we had so many ambitions to fight back, but now Ralf's recovery is most important."

It's interesting that they only announced Gene for France, despite the fact Ralf will be out much longer than that.

Could it be that Gene will keep the seat based on his France result?

Or will they put Jungle Boy in the car in GB?

Or give JV a tryout, then a shot at a race?

This is being discussed here in the Finnish motorsports press as well.

That, and the possibility that Häkkinen will get a test with Williams in August - and that Frank Williams has suposedly offered Häkä $10 million to drive next year. It appears that Ron Dennis is blocking this so far because Häkkinen is still "under contract" with Mc Laren.

Anyway, about Ralf. Take your time getting well ...

to answer your question: i have found that news that comes out at atlasfi or other sites is already out here in finland a few days before. there is also a lot of coverage about häkkinen and kimi that isn't mentioned elsewhere.

Come on everybody, let's just order our Marc Gené caps and quit worrying about who might replace Ralf long-term.

I hope Ralf has a speedy and trouble-free recovery.

Gene looked good in the last race he ran with Ralf out. Let's see how well he does.

I'll be interested to see as well, as he seems like a decent chap.

But... he did well last year 1) at Monza, a less technical circuit than MC, and 2) the Williams was in great form then. So we shall see what happens, as McLaren *should* be upping its game this weekend too.

As for Mika... I'll believe that when I see it. Frank doesn't like to part with that kind of cash too easily. Plus, Mika's been out longer than JV, and he was getting schooled by DC most of his last year at McLaren, if my very foggy memory serves me.

I give a to Mika for his career, but I think it's over...

Marc was part of the BMW USGP Experience at Indy in that he was our speaker every evening and had dinner with us two evenings and visited the suite during the race. He is a good guy for sure. He says he's better than he was when he drove for Minardi and makes fewer mistakes in addition to being faster. He's got a lot of km's in the FW26. It seems that the FW26 is not as good (relatively anyway) as the FW25, so he not in as strong a position as he was at Monza last year. There will be plenty of pressure on Marc. This will have implications if he has any chance at all for next year.

As for Mika, I miss his sense of humor in the interviews, but I agree I'll believe when I seen it.
