CP or no CP, manual vs. DCT & Color Questions

Hi, I'm new to this board since my 2006 750i and pretty much out of the BMW loop for the past several years. Have a 2011 RR Supercharged that I absolutely adore. I now find myself in the market for a 2014 M5 (although a small part of me wants to wait for 2015 M3 or M5).

I drove a 2014 M5 ex-Competition Package on Friday. Excellent handling/speed, extraordinarily heavy feeling and quite (with the exception of the hiddeous piped in exhaust notes, shame on you BMW).
Overall, I was disgusted by the feel of the steering (numb and disconnected from the road) and swore the M5 off. How could BMW f*#% up something so critical?
Anyhow, after some research, I went to another dealer today and drove an M5 with the Competition Package. The steering felt somewhat more connected to the road and I was much happier. It was not close to perfect but 60% of the way there. IMO, the CP is a must have option if you don't want a steering wheel that feels like a part of the dashboard.

I also drove a 6 speed manual M5 and it was great (short throw and smooth). My experience was quite better than some of the horrible reviews that I've read about the M5s manual transmission. As much as I want a manual, I have sadly decided that the M5 is best with the modern technology of the DCT. The manual was fun but after 20 minutes it started to feel too laborious mated to the M5 tank. I drove them back to back to back and kept coming to the same conclusion.

Regarding color choice, I kindly solicit your help. My last three cars have all been either gray or black, with all black interiors. I am sick of black both for exterior and interior.
I've narrowed it down to either Silverstone or Space Gray.

Silverstone looks excellent but I'm afraid that it might be a little too light and a little too feminine for my taste but can't tell for sure because I can't find one at local dealers. I don't think that it looks as blue as the BMW site represents but am somewhat afraid to order without actually seeing one.

Space Gray is modest and amazingly elegant, and perfectly suited for the aggressive M5.

For interior, my first choice is Silverstone (I'm sick of black and feel that light interiors accentuate BMW interiors). Although, I am concerned that my kids (and me too) will trash the light interior and it will look like crap in 3 years. Anyone have firsthand experience with Silverstone Merino leather?

Nevertheless, here are the color combinations that I'm considering:

1) Space Gray / Silver stone
2) Silverstone / Silverstone
3) Silverstone / Black

I would greatly appreciate your thoughts. Thanks in advance!

Interesting to hear about your take on the manual transmission. I want to like the manual, but feel like the weight would also sway me towards the DCT.

As for color, I currently have a light interior (previously always had black interior), and will concur that it can be a pain to keep clean, not to mention the danger that raw or dark denim can pose.

That said, I would go for the Silverstone but be ready to invest in some serious leather cleaning/interior detailing if owning it for the long haul.

I guess it all depends on how long you plan on keeping the car. If it's a 2.5 - 3 year lease, go for the lighter color and let the next owner deal with it.

Thanks for the reply D.B.V.

I just watched an excellent review by Carlos Lago on the subject of a manual F10 M5. I'm sure most of you have already seen it but here's the link anyway:

Funny, after a couple days, I'm now second guessing myself regarding axing the manual transmission. And the gambler in me wants to just order the six-speed, and live with the consequences! I think that it's one of those things that one has to live with for a while to truly appreciate.

Regarding colors... I was at the dealer today, almost pulled the trigger on a Silverstone exterior with full Silverstone leather... But last minute I changed my mind to full black interior because Silverstone just looked too light after seeing another car on the lot in Singapore Grey with full Siverstone leather. (The Singapore Grey, by the way, looks amazing.)

On top of that, a few of the guys there basically talked me out Silverstone paint, saying that it's too blue for the M5. I really just want silver (lover Titanium) but won't spend $5,000 to get it on the M5.

So now I'm leaning toward Space Gray, a full black leather interior with a manual transmission. I know, the color combination is quite boring (but very safe).

I would agree that Singapore Grey does look amazing. Personally myself I got a black one but that's just me. If you were so used to black but want a change I think the Singapore Grey might do it.

Like you being sick of black on black I am tired of Silverstone.

Moonstone seems a little to beige for my taste.

Firstly nothing will feel as good and smooth as the RR ST.

Personally I have the LCI SDT M5 ( no CP) and have Silverstone Leather with NO problems with this colour, I have had light leather for the last 5 new BMW's.
I have gone for the MCB as IMO it makes the Car a real "M".

What did you end up doing? I have the same dilemma, I was convinced I wanted MT until I tried the DCT today.!!! I would have to order the MT but they have a Black with Sakhir Orange that looks amazing!! are you buying? leasing??

I ordered a DCT Space Gray, Full Black Leather, CP with 601M wheels (although it kills me to order inferior wheel but the the 343Ms are just not my taste). I plan on getting the base 19" 345M wheels with snow tires for the cold 5/12 months.

Full disclosure: I'm not 100 percent satisfied with my order as part of me would have been happier with a new M3 with manual transmission. I just don't want to wait. Time will tell I guess.
I also really wanted a plain silver color like Titanium but BMW doesn't offer with M5. The Individual colors on offer for M5 are a big disappointment.

And I am not 100 percent sure about forgoing the manual transmission but went DCT because manual felt too cumbersome after 20 minute test drive.

I almost cancelled my order like 4 times but will give it a shot.

I'm most worried that the M5 will be overkill for me as I don't race and am not into modifications. The M5 beat out some tough competition... I was considering the new Range Rover or Mercedes AMG wagon. Time will tell.

I purchased, hopefully won't get too crushed on resale. It's scary to see how many 2013 M5s are for sale.

The DCT is the best transmission I've ever driven. You'll love the choice.

I did not drive the F10 with a manual, but based on the review above it doesn't sound like much has changed over the years. The not-quite-linear clutch, the detent "pop" gear to gear.... while you get used to it, it's very much a BMW "thing" and if you, like me, prefer a linear clutch and no strong detent in gear changes, that manual will wear on you over time. Others have no issue with it. Entirely buyer preference.

I love Carlos Lago's reviews because they are primarily from behind the wheel and generally honest. For that reason Chris Harris is one of my all time favorites as well, and as much as Carlos talks positively about the manual in the M5, Chris loves the DCT (2:10 in but the whole review is gold):

A newer Chris Harris review with a comparo:

I think we can't go wrong bluehorshoe... The DCT was amazing. I never would've imagined that I would like it that much.

Its funny we are such a similar position. I have been reading about M5 for the last 3 weeks or so and all the competition. I think the only car I would think of getting would be the S6 just because of its sticker price and the seats are beautiful... definitely not as fun though as our M5. I was hoping to wait for the M3 but it will take a while for me to have the exact M3 I wanted. I will eventually go down to the M3 after this lease or buy is done. I think I will probably stay with BMW for a while!!

how was the new Range Rover?? I had a 2006 Supercharged sport before and loved it. I went to see the new sport and the price tag killed me.... didn't even drive it... I love the Cayenne as well... its the best SUV out there.. I have to admit though that today I saw a new X5 and it was beautiful... Great improvement

When does your car arrive??

I believe the 2014 Full-sized RR Supercharged is the best SUV ever made for any price by a long shot.

I have another problem now because my order is about to pop in the BMW system and I won't be able to change.

I was thinking about changing to Sapphire Black on full black leather with trace aluminum trim (from Space Gray with Anthracite).
Black and M5 go perfectly together. Thoughts?

I have the Space Gray with black interior and I love it. The Space Gray looks much better in person than those brochure pics above. I also love the DCT. I considered the manual as well, but came to the same conclusion. It would be fun to have 20% of the time, but the other 80% would get cumbersome. I had my dealership put the carbon interior panels in instead of the stock aluminum and it looks great.

No regrets here and hope you have none as well.

I drove black with sahkir orange yesterday and it looked amazing. I think black looks legit on the M5. I would go black... Probably white is the only
Color I would like the least.. The interior of the Car is beautiful. I feel BM has stepped up in that department a lot.

I will keep you posted to see what I end up doing!

Good for you sir. Nice choice. Black with orange is sweet. I actually found a car last week (couldn't wait to build), went with black inside and out.

Jada. Congrats. Did you end up going with the broker? The deal they gave you was nice.
