BMWs throw back to the iconic 2002, with a renewed form and function. The smallest car in BMW's line up but still packs a punch. Available in coupe or convertible, powered by either an inline 6 in the 128 or the twin turbo rocket sled 135.

Looking at getting into my first Bimmer, questions for the experienced.

My truck recently got stolen and stripped. I'm hoping for a payout to put down on a car that's fun to drive.
Later today I plan on going to take a look at a used 2103 135is with 3050 on the clock. I understand that it was in a crash that deployed the airbags and required body work. But as such is a good price. I originally wanted a 335i and a MT, but those are out of my price range and not in my area. So, I have spoke to this mom and pop dealership that has this car. They say that the BMW warranty still applies. Questions. How do I find out if that warranty applies and is transferable? How long is the standard warranty? What do I need to be on the look for with this car? Known common issues?
I plan on contacting the shop that did the work on the car and seeing what all was done.
What would you gents pay for this? Ball park.

And please forgive me for not having my sig updated and the noobness of my questions. Thanks for your input.

I will post pictures and more info later.

BMW warranty will apply, but may not cover anything replaced during repairs after the accident. I would find out where the repairs were done and the extent of the damage. You will need that info before deciding how much it's worth.

Yes. Thank you.
I will be going by the dealership shortly and assessing any thing I can. And getting the information on the shop.

The standard warranty is 4 years or 50,000 miles and includes free maintenance.

A dealer can read the history on the key and tell you the maintenance history.

Test Drive

Thanks for the replies gentleman. I just got back from driving, it's a good machine and drives like a dream.

I took lots and lots of pictures and videos. I will post a few here, specifically the ones that show any signs of repaired damage. Seems to be only body panels. Let me know what yall think.

Also, I am unable to get any information regarding what work was done to the car due to it being bought at a dealer auction and the Hippa act. However; I am going to poll the local BMW dealership and see how much warranty is left and such.

Let me know if yall see anything or have any comments. This vehicle, if i go for it, will be my daily driver and I don't want to proverbially screwed over.

Thanks again guys.

Did you check CarFax for any info on the wreck? Sometimes you can get names of dealers/shops from there. I would be concerned about body panels that don't fit together properly. Sometimes this can indicate frame damage.

Also, the HIPAA act (Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act) does not have anything to do with work done on a vehicle. Personal info about the previous owner should be kept private (still unrelated to HIPAA, though) but vehicle repair history is definitely not protected. If they aren't willing to provide details I would look elsewhere.

They have provided me with an autocheck report, and I am going to get the carfax report. The autocheck reports the accident at a minor impact in which the airbags deployed. We will see what the carfax says.
as far as Hippa goes, I was asking about the previous owner.
All the door gaps, hood gap and truck lined up as well as i could have imagined, which is a good indicator. It drove well and tracked straight. I checked underbody and suspension and as far as i can tell, everything is as it was off the factory line. I have a few videos of the suspension components and some of the places inside the wheel wells where the panels meet. But the most obvious things I posted earlier. Thanks for your input. Keep it coming.

I don't understand how it ended up at a "mom and pop" dealership. It could be that the previous owner just traded it without fixing it but I would ask. It doesn't seem consistent with minor damage.

Earlier 135s had HPFP issues but this is a n55 and should be fine. Cars at the end of a model run generally have fewer. "Bugs". Most cars generally have to visit a body shop sometime. Maybe this one just went there early.

I'm with ya.
They bought it at a dealer auction.
I am in communication with them about any history available and getting it only this car report but also the carfax report. It's hard to pass up this deal, if the car has/had suspension or frame damage I would be out. But so far it looks great, just some body panels.

It drive great and is hard to pass up. Not saying I'm going for it definitely, but if it comes up that it has just has the body work, and I can't get some more info about the previous, and short, life it had. You may be looking at my first BMW.

I have looked into the issues with the N54 and am pleased that this has the N55. I am no stranger to motor mechanics, tuning, turbos, etc.
I previously ran a small tuning company for diesel trucks. As such, I love knowledge. Keep it coming.

Thank you.

Honestly? I'd run... not walk away from this car.

The repairs you've posted look like they were seriously done on the cheap. This says to me that they were not done well and you might have other troubles down the road. While body panel problems are usually not a big deal, there could be any range of problems with the body underneath those panels that you can't see. In addition, the number of repairs in such disparate areas imply to me that the wreck was bad... like really bad. Possibly a rollover incident. Cars aren't meant to roll like that, so you could easily have fractures in the body where you can't see it that'll become serious issues later.

While I get that this is a nice looking car that you want, you might just be buying into a lot of heartache down the road.

EDIT: Also as a side note, the HPFP issues on the N54 were seriously overblown in this forum. It affected a good number of cars but there's no evidence that every car suffered the problems. Plus, the warranties were extended out so that HPFP problems shouldn't be a concern on any used 135i I've seen. Having said that though, there were suspension changes later in the 135i's life, around the time of the N55 introduction that made the car a whole lot better to drive. The changes were subtle, but I felt it when driving an N54 and N55 135i back-to-back.

"Honestly?" Always.
Thank you for your input. That's the reason I'm here, to learn and ask questions.
Here's one for you. Say you had some disposable income and this was just gonna be a toy, how much would you pay for it knowing it's a risk?

I agree with thumper on this car. The pix of the repaired areas, the dealership it's at, and the rest of the "unknowns" would make me walk away. You may be getting a truckload of problems, and sour you on BMW for life. Find another one, there are lot's of them in TX.

Looks you gentleman may be right. I got the carfax report. I will post the additional information I received shortly. I would like to get more information about what happened to the vehicle. But carfax reports total loss vehicle. Not sure why, it's hard for me to see how it could have been damaged enough to make it a total loss. But sometimes insurance does that for odd reasons. Thank you guys for your input.

Edit: BMW dealership reports no red flags on warranty work. Could bring it in right now.

I bought a BMWz from a used car dealership that specialized in high end vehicles and they bought the car at an auction. You can get a decent deal if you are working with the right kind of dealership and take the right steps to protect yourself. Since my dealer was a used car dealer and they specialized in low mileage luxury cars they get most of their cars from auctions. Not all car auctions are selling someones used 10 year old junker. I took the car I was considering buying to a BMW dealer and paid to have it inspected and evaluated. If you pay the dealership, they are working for you and tend to give you the honest truth about the car. They were able to tell me the cars history, why the BMW dealership sold it at auction and they even tested the thickness of the paint to see if it had been repainted (it hadn't). There were absolutely no issues, so I bought the car and lived happily with it for five years. I cant remember what vI pad - $200 or $300, it was well worth it.

By the way, I agree with the respondent who said the damage is spread over too many areas for the wreck to have been a minor one. Your picture 4 was the one that scares me the most and suggests a possible bent frame.

If you were serious about the car, I think you would have skipped the carfax report (which is $40) and went with a full pre-purchase inspection. (costs $100-200 at a independent shop or around $300-400 at a official bmw dealership) (or you could just do both)

a pre-purchase inspection would reveal EVERYTHING in detail instead of just being listed as a total loss and etc...

I literally won't let friends buy used cars without getting one especially since autocheck and carfax report doesn't usually report fixes from smaller independent shops and etc....

Even though all the people say run/get away from the car, I've also seen plenty of "salvage/total loss" titled cars that turned out to have a great repair job done to them and ran flawlessly for a ridiculously long time...

TLDR: get it checked out by a bmw specialist.
