This problem honestly made me second guess everything. The BMW regional mechanic even came in, looked at the car and said it was "normal." I can say after driving the car for another 40K miles that the sound is still there - not much worse, not better in any way at all and the engine still seems sound. I get the occasional increased emissions warning that everyone seems to get (ethanol free gas seems to usually cure it), and have had a couple small things done, but the knocking sound is obvious as ever w/no adverse effect (that I can tell) yet to the engine...

Im an engine builder from the marine and nascar world and just bought a 2004 645ci and it too has the "tick" this one ticks at an idle but goes away around 1200rpm which doesnt really raise any alarms with me but for a so called luxury car I agree it shouldn't be there so its back to basics to find this "tick". If it disappears at a higher rpm that indicates oil pressure to a loss pump lifter. If a bearing is going out it will go out very quickly not in thousands of miles. If it is a valve train issue after the engine is brought to temperature if a valve cover is removed a infared heat detector pointed at each lobe will tell you yes or no instantly if theres a issue. There are also oil additives that make your oil slippery slimey I wouldnt recommend leaving this oil slime in but for trouble shooting absolutely these are things to do at home so Joe mechanic doesnt want to replace your brakes for this "tick". Im gonna do these ecact things and tell the results

Have subscribed to the thread, hoping for something to help pin point this one. I have the same tick on my 745i (euro spec).

If it helps, the tick fades away for a few days after adding Liqui Moly Hydraulic Lifter Additive. Also, if the oil level get a bit low, then the tick get worse.

This makes me think it's something to do with the oil pressure operating the hydraulic lifters, or a sticky / lazy lifter.

these engines do not like being run on low oil levels!!! I always kept mine topped up........

Always said I would go back to a 6 series

Our engines have a faint tick due to the intermediate valve train. If the hood was closed, you would probably now hear the tick. With the oil fill cap removed, it will get a lot more noticeable. Make sure you are running the correct oil, & the level is not low.
