Is a 1997 M3 reliable?

I had a 2010 535i X-Drive with 85,000 miles for less than 6 months that took a **** me. Now I have a 1992 525i with 218,000 miles with zero problems (Knock on wood) expect that it eats a little oil. So I was wondering. Is a 1997 M3 like the old ones that are reliable, or like new generation that will kill my wallet? Also I know this is M3 section. But I was wondering about a 2001 M5

We've had my M3 since 2009, 155K and it would be my guess that the M5 is just like it's little brother, it will have some quirks that need working out. Once the shortcomings are addressed I'd say they're as reliable as any other vehicle in their class.
Proper care during it's upbringing plays a key role too.

Thank you! Do you know any things that I should look for when I go to check the car out? Any specific problems?

Not sure about the M5.
Go to FAQ's. Wear out the search feature on here and other Bimmer forums.
