Mein Auto: 2014 BMW X1 35
Per BMWUSA.com

Weight
3527 for 2.8 sdrive
3726 for 2.8 xdrive
3891 for 3.5 xdrive

The discussion was around xdrive being a con. Someone asked why that was a con, and I mentioned due to more weight....

Those are base weights. Xdrive true weight is 200lbs. If you add the sunroof to the 28i x it would be equal to the 35i.

Most of the weight difference in due to the engines:

Difference in weight between 528i and 535i (both cars have sunroof and power seats standard) - 143 pounds

Difference in weight between X1 28i and X1 35i is 165 pounds.

Thus, sunroof-roof + (power-manual) seats about 22 pounds total.

And, in any case, the sunroof and power seats do nothing to change the weight distribution anyway.

The xdrive weight is clear, no argument about that.

And if I have a gallon of milk, a big double big gulp and a Big Mac, it adds another 12.62 pounds...with an extra large fry, 12.82 pounds

I test drove both Xdrives and the power difference is noticeable. I honestly don't know how one can't tell. Like its already said, adding the Xenon (must) and the sunroof, you getting close both in price and weight to the 35i. Ugh, all this weight talk but nobody could sell me the 28i just because hey, its about 200 lbs less!! However I understand if that $4-6K saving is an object. Preferences and what you can and want to pay for.

Lol, I'm not sure anymore what exactly we are arguing about. I said previously:

For me the difference between identically equipped would have been "only" $3250 (in msrp) but I wanted the 8 speed and didn't want to spend the extra, so easy choice for me.

I never had any trouble passing on highway with my e46 (180 something horse power) or with my wife's X3, and since I'm not moving to germany any time soon it will certainly be a non-issue with X1.

Everybody has different preferences, but I like the fact that 28i is lighter and with better weight distribution. No question, that the 6 cylinder is superior in terms of power/torque.

P.S. Now, I still think that adding the sunroof to 28 xdrive makes negligible difference in weight and the bulk of the difference is the engine weight difference as calculated above. And it is above the front axle, that's all.

Eric, I get it about the other options, but the six cylinder engine has to weight more than the four banger. I don't have any proof mind you, but a bigger block, cylinders and cylinder heads, upgraded cooling system to cope with extra head that beast throws off .... what am I missing?

Regards,

Nick

For me like others fuel economy is marginally better.
THere is no lack of power from 55 to 100 in the 28. It moves like a bat out of hell.

It all depends on what you are used to. I went from an N54 335i to a x28i and needed to add the BMS Stage 1 tune specifically for freeway passing acceleration. The N20 is only adequate in comparison (without a tune). I am one who does prefer the 8sp transmission.

I am used to driving Ducatis and the x28 is fast enough for me. You certainly don't need the extra speed you just want to be faster than everyone else. Maybe if you were going to pass 6 cars in a row accross double lines you might need it.

The X1 is for my SO. She's just happy that she's getting into another BMW. Couldn't care less if there were mice on an exercise wheel propelling the vehicle. As long as she can disable the start-stop function, she's content.
