Video: 2013 BMW M3 vs. 2014 Corvette Stingray -Edmunds.com

Edmunds.com compares the all new Corvette Stingray and departing legend BMW M3 on performance stats, 0-60/quarter mile times, braking distances, slalom runs & skip pad ratings. What do you think of the findings? How do you thing the next M3 will stack up?

New state of the art dedicated sports car vs. heavier less powerful sedan based design conceived many years ago + using a sick M3 for testing to boot....the outcome is not a surprise but really - who cares....

The e90 M3 remains one of the finest - most satisfying - all around sports cars ever produced. In 6 - 7 years a new generation Corvette will be introduced and the current car will be yesterday's news as opposed to the e90 M3 which in 20 years will continue to be remembered and venerated as a BMW for the ages.

Not quite Apples v. Apples here. I think you could probably argue that the M3 is a GT rather than a sports car.

I think it was a great comparison. Bottom line - the new Vette is not only better than the old Vette, but worth a closer look as a potential car for those that never considered buying American. I'm certainly super curious about it!

And also, the M3 has held up pretty damn well for 5 years. Excited for the future.

Inversely, they could also do a 2003 era C5 vs 2008 M3 and see what shakes out as well. The M3 and Vette are such different beasts and I doubt many actually cross-shop them (maybe they do ). I guess Edmunds were perhaps just looking to compare the Vette to the M3 because they are now in the same price range especially now since the Viper went way up. However, I see Edmunds also comparing the Corvette to a GTR-Track edition that runs over $100k as well.

The Corvette a great damn value though, that's for sure.

Not sure I am really liking the rear of the C7, it's just so busy.

The C7 is a very nice car indeed.
M3 is for me with looks and driving appeal.

If the lunch control worked it would have been a better match in the quarter mile. But at the end of the day the m3 is still my choice

There isn't anything surprising here. $ for $, pound for pound, the Stingray is a better value/performance proposition than the M3.

If one is after best performance for the least amount of money, the Stingray is probably one of the handful of cars to consider.

The M3, on the other hand, is for someone who appreciates the fine balance (performance, practicality, luxury). It's never the best in any one category, but there is very few that can compete in all the things that the M3 does so well.

Very impressive showing from the Corvette. Seems like a nice car. Does not phase my love for the M3 one bit, in fact i think the e92 looks amazing! The Corvette looks good too and does have some catchy lines, but not as refined nor timeless as the BMW.

I'd cross shop in a heart beat if I didn't need a back seat for the kiddos! I'm extremely impressed with the new 'vette. They have always been a great bang for buck performer, but even moreso now. Only thing I don't like is the tail light set up, but I can get over it.

This one. M3 has morphed from my dream car as a teenager in the eighties to a relatively bloated businessman's sporty motorway cruiser today.

In parallel the Corvette has morphed from decent straight-line speed with no appetite for corners with a Rubbermaid interior to today... now it's a bona-fide Ferrari challenger with seats and an interior to match the $51K base price (~$80K in Ferrari 458 beating Z06 form)

Still I have many E46 M3 friends that don't realize how competent the Z06 C6 and even stock C7 are. Corvette forums often have stories of E90 M3 guys trying to race Z06 owners at stoplights.. the few Z06 owners that bite the bait totally trash the M3 boys.

Latest Z06 has 625hp and skid pad gs are going to be crazy if the stock C7 numbers are anything to go by.

C7 is a real sports car, C7 Z06 a decent track car and the M3 is a fast car for those that need more comfort on long trips. On the other hand I love catching 400+hp cars in my MX-5 at track days

What?

An M3 is a 4-5 seat car, the Corvette a 2 seater with essentially no trunk. That Chevy could build a car with 2 seats that is faster than a BMW with 4 should not be surprising to anyone. I think people simply miss the point of the M3 or C63AMG or Audi RS6, etc. when they compare them to dedicated sports cars.

What makes the M3 amazing is that it is a 4 seater that can even be compared to the likes of Corvette, Porsche, or even Lamborghini and Ferrari. When I looked for a car in 2011 I had no price constraints or preconceived notions of what I wanted, except I wanted it to be useable as a daily driver. I looked at all the 4 seaters, and Corvette, Lamborghini, Ferrari, Audi R8 V10, etc.

I was almost ready to pull the trigger on an R8 when it hit me, I am going to end up leaving that car in the garage most of the time because it has only 2 seats and almost no trunk. That realization got me looking at the M5, Panamera, Audi (S4 to S8) AMG C and E, but in the end the M3 combined a very high level of sportiness with practicality that the others simply didn't have. (M5 is really interesting but it is simply too big to be really sporty, as is the S and RS Audis and Mercedes.

The point is, the M3 isn't the best sports car, but it amazing because it is not a sports car, it's a 4 seater that is almost as fast as the very best 2 seaters in the world (better than many).

Well, the Mustang GT is about as fast as an M3, and even on a road course the ZL1 Camaro would be all an M3 could handle. The upcoming Z28 w/505hp Z06 engine will likely be significantly faster than an E9x M3.

Still, being a fan of some luxury with my "boy racer", and loving the technology gizmos (MDrive, DCT, adjustable everything), plus that high-revving V8 which is gone (forever? Sniffle) is too much to overcome. I don't know when I'll be ready to part with mine, but it's gonna be a while.

Though I do really like the new 'vette and upcoming Z28. Maybe I can add another bay to my garage ....

Exactly it's a different category of car and demographic of buyer.

Everyone I known with a Corvette has a daily driver and is at least in their mid 40s to 60s; probably all millionaires, several almost certainly multi-. Virtually everyone I have known with an M3 was in their late 20s to mid 30s and leased it as their only car. I don't know anyone over forty with an M3, but know loads with 911s, Caymans, Corvettes, Miatas etc.

The E90 M3 is a good car but I prefer owning a comfy 328i and dedicated track car. By the time appropriate modifications are made no good track car is good on the street. No one I've known with a stock M3 has been to more than one or two track days; it's different demographic.

A friend of mine swaps cars every year and currently has a Mustang GT in the stable. It was not as bad in corners as he expected but is no Corvette. His skills are similar to mine and he could not keep up with my MX-5 on our favorite mountain roads. He's never been a BMW guy since wrecking an M Roadster, but the RS4 he had was way better in the corners than the Mustang GT (with track pack, or whatever that option is called).

Surprised that no one has mentioned corvette customer satisfaction... The two happiest days in a corvette owners life are the day they buy it and the day they sell it. I don't think that is as prevalent in M3 owners.

You forgot that if you purchase a convertible Corvette, you must be loosing all or most of your hair or immediately dye it gray.

Corvette owners love their cars.

What are you talking about? The guys on the Vette forums are more passionate than us. Nicer, too.
