To Flare or Not to Flare with X5M 20's??

I just purchased a pristine condition set of OEM X5M 20's for my wife's X5. They look AWESOME! Except for the lack of fender flares of course. I already have an OEM set of flares on order and should be getting them this week. I am definitely installing the rears because they need it DESPERATELY. As for the front though, they sit pretty flush as is. My question is if any of you guys are running any of the factory 20's or 21's with fender flares only in the rear? I know the whole point of the flare is so the wheel sits flush, which it is already is in the front.

Any Input?? Thanks in advance

Flaring just the rear is going to accent the hips of the X5, that being said I can't recall seeing anyone just run rears. WI would put the rears on first, step back, and see what I thought before installing the fronts. Maybe even snap a pic to share

Thanks for all the replies guys. I am going to put all 4 on so that everything matches, I was just curious if anyone had only done the rears.

NICE!! Did you put them only on the back first (since you were thinking of doing that) and walk around the vehicle to see how it looked before putting on the fronts?

I didn't have a chance actually. I dropped it off to my local indie body shop and grabbed some lunch next door and by the time I was finished it was done!

FYI, those are not X5M rims, they are X5 M-Sport rims.

I found a set of take-off X5M #299M wheels and tires for $1,100 and put 'em on my GF's '13 X5 35i after boring the rear wheels for the larger 35i's rear hubs. She liked it at first but then kept asking me why the wheels stuck out beyond the rear fenders so I added the black flares front and rear. She was right, it looks much better and factory like with the flares. I found the flares on e-bay for about $300 but had to get a pop-rivit tool to install the flares; took about 2 hours to do all 4.

I've kept my own X5M #300M wheels and tires intact in case I get tired of the BBS SV 20" square set-up I have on my X5M.

Any link of the seller on ebay? Planning to add fender flares on my X5 as well.

Drill into the middle of it and use needle nose pliers to pull it out.

+1. They are just synthetic.

Ok, and I assume this can be close to easily done, without damaging the original fenders, if you're paying attention. They new ones just pop in?

EZ to remove the stock ones as the rivets are plastic. The new rivets go in easily but the rivet shank diameter is > than what works with hardware store pop rivet tools; you'll need the body shop version - about $30 or borrow one.

Correct - these are X5M wheels on a '13 X5 35i with the flares >>

+1 on the tool. I got the tool and 40 rivets from Harbor Freight $16.00 (don't know if you have one near you, but the price is great for those "not so often used tools"...not the best quality, but they work)

Thanks everyone. Drilling worked great, except that most of the poles (center shaft of the rivet) from the rivets fell down into the wheel well somewhere. I started taking some of the plastic pieces under the truck a part, but it was never ending, which is nice for underbody protection, but tedious for removal, so I put it all back together, and hope the little poles don't rattle around too much.

I posted pictures here, http://www.bimmerfest.com/forums/sho...5&postcount=17 .

I just used a nail set and a small hammer to drive the existing rivets center shaft out. They're floating in the bottom of the wheel wells now, but as long as they don't make any noise, they're harmless.

One interesting fact: The nice $30 plastic rivet tool on Amazon doesn't work well with the BMW rivets (it doesn't grip worth a darn), but the cheap $16-for-the-set one from Harbor Freight works flawlessly.

Yeah, I used the tool from Harbor Freight too. It worked perfect. I think the OEM rivets themselves worked better, though. I used the OEM ones, which came with the fender extension kit, a bag full, without one issue. Except, I swapped the wrong rivets in the rear versus front, so had to re-do about 5 of them. Anyhow, I was short on the OEM ones, by one, so I used one of the ones that came with the tool, and went through 3 of them, before it secured correctly.
