DIY for Roof Rails?

Here's a great write up for individuals with roof bars already installed.

http://www.xoutpost.com/bmw-sav-foru...stall-diy.html

What I need to know is, has anyone without roof rails successfully installed roof rails?

If you cannot figure it out from that post you have no business approaching the X5 with tools!

and BTW, there is a search button that would tell you people have installed rails.

If you READ the thread in it's entirety, you'd see that the OP in that thread said there was no way for people that didn't have these installed at the factory to do it. Hence the thread.

You should be a little easy on the assumption that I can't diy. I've personally done too many things on my e36 to mention and did a complete rear subframe fix on my e46.

Thanks for not helping.

I am confused. Doesn't the DYI thread already have the answer to your question?

Hence ard's reply:

From all my searching he is the only one to say whether it could or couldn't be done. I am looking for someone else that may have put them in post factory.

I've read the thread and looked at the photos.
Somebody correct me if I'm wrong, but the link appears to provide, in detail, instructions on how to install roof rails on an X5 that was not originally equipped with them.
The answer to the very question you asked.

Knudson, please re-read the linked thread.

I highly doubt you looked at the pictures or read anything in the link. The creator of that thread had black rails from the factory and he wanted different ones.

If you look in his last pic you'll see the old roof rails.

No, actually I did read it.
I can't find that line by ADAMT, but I found this one:

No coding needed as nothing electrical is involved.
I doubt you would have to do any drilling at all. There are not that many cars that come with rails-delete option so it would make no sense for the factory to re-tool production line just to accommodate these select few. I think all trucks got holes pre-drilled and it is the rubber seal strip that is different.

My interpretation of this entry by the OP would suggest that the mounting holes are already in the car. If you peel the roof rubber insert up, you may find them. Then, you can follow his instructions and install your own rails. If you read them.
