2012 X5 35i - is this engine sound normal?

Take a listen - this is the sound of the engine at idle. You can't hear it from inside the car, but you can from the outside. No codes. Does it sound normal?

That's not good. Please quickly send it to the dealer.
Maybe it's related to the double VANOS (top of engine block) thing or it may be something else.
Mine did that for a few seconds after a cold start-up in the morning. For some time I thought it was a turbo wastegate rattle but that checked out fine a few times.
It may be an uphill battle if it doesn't throw a code. But if it continuously makes that sound all day, it's easy for the dealer to ask the BMW HQ to pay for the repair ("no charge, under warranty").
Mine eventually threw a big code ("engine malfunction" on two screens) error last month and the BMW dealer fixed/replaced it... and it's now silent and super smooth.

edit: Another idea is... go to the dealer and have them boot-up a second or third X5 to listen/compare. Good luck!

That sound is normal for a cold start when it has been cold out and sitting for 12+ hours. It's the bi turbo warming up.
