95 radio lcd backlight repair

Has anybody replaced the lcd backlight bulbs on their stock radio? I'm trying to identify an appropriate bulb to replace them with. It looks like radio shack 272-1092 might do the trick but I'd to be sure before I solder them in. I'm especially concerned with heat build up from using the wrong wattage bulb. Also, will a white LED work well as a backlight? I wonder if it will dim correctly/noticeably?

TIA,
Mike

I see a lot of views but no replies to this post so for the benefit of those truely interested, the radio shack microlamps (272-1092) work beautifully and are an inexpensive ($1.50) fix.

This is an ooold thread, rising up like a zombie!

The backlight on my radio on an e39 540 is going out - NOT a pixel problem - it's the backlighting. I haven't cracked it open yet, wanted to do some research on here before doing so. I've read a couple things mentioning soldering, but that was for older models (not like my cars a spring chicken either lol). If anyone's got anything to add I'd love to hear it!

Thanks!

You just need to replace the bulbs. It's not very hard. The Bentley manual covers how to remove the radio. When you order the bulbs, make sure to get the bulbs with the black base, not the green base.

Well ..... now that I think about it, I believe I was thinking of the lights for the OBC. Sorry. Good luck in your quest.
