Smoke at 70 MPH....sometimes start up

Hi All.............Not posted in a long long time. Thanks in advance to any ideas you may have too BTW.

My wife's 05 X3 3.0. 85K miles only. Been running fine forever apart from occasional rough idle at start up that clear.

Thursday we had an oil/filter change and check all the filters etc. Everything was fine......Friday drove from Vancouver to Seattle. About half way (65 miles) heading up a gentle slope in I-5 a puff of smoke out the exhaust. Cleared almost immediately. Parked in Seattle for about 40 mins....came out fired up rough idle and a load of smoke. Not oil smell though. Cleared. Did it again 20 mins later. Saturday was rainy and cold. First start up a little rough and smokey. OK for the rest of the day.

Sunday seemed OK till about half way back to Vancouver. Lots of smoke at 75 MPH and cleared in 10 seconds. Did this 3 times.

No water down, no oil down and for the most part its running as sweet as a sewing machine.

Have to add the Service Engine Soon light has been on a long while and we know it's lean codes and suspect MAF Sensor needs replacing. But my wife hardly drives the thing so it did not seem important.

Any Ideas?

Thanks Peeps.

It's actually coming form the tail pipe. I went back there on start up to sniff the smoke. Definitely not that oil burning smell. More a chemical small. Not like normal cold start up exhaust smell either. Thanks for the idea though.

My first thought was the crankcase vent valve.

You would think the long drive would help clear things out - maybe that's what was happening.

Does it get annual oil changes because of short trips?

Not sure about the rough idle at startup that clears. Might be time for new plugs, and VCG could be done at same time.

White towards grey smoke. Funny smell. Not oil and not regular burnt gasoline.

It does get lots of short trips for sure, but at least once a week it gets a run down town and back. Some weeks twice. 25/30 mins each way.

Sure the rough start up is the MAF Sensor. I have ordered one now as we have been told to change it.

Its the way it just clears and all is 100% normal that's the weirdest part.

I was driving this weekend and the car gets to do what it likes then. My wife is not a snail driver but on the speed limit kinda girl.

Just changed the oil. Castrol 5/40. It had Liqui Moly in it before. Same weight from memory.

I wonder if cleaning that MAF sensor would help?

white/grey smoke usually means coolant, how often do you change the oil?

The oil is done yearly or at half distance to what the service meter tells us.

It's the way it smokes and then suddenly stops that is odd. A hot engine running at 70 MPH suddenly smoking and then stopping is very strange.

The oil/water separator was suggested by BimmerParts in Duncan, BC,

That's always been my experience but I doubt it in this instance. Couldn't a cracked breather hose from the ccv cause this too? It would explain some of the CEL codes too.

It really sounds like a frozen/clogged/failed CCV valve. Not to be alarmist, but you really don't want to hydrolock your engine due to this.

My car smoked two weeks ago at highway speeds from cracked CCV. Couldn't get it to do it again. Then it happened again a week later. The CCV was shot and leaking all over itself. Grey smoke. Smells like nothing I've smelled in 20 years of working on cars.

That must be it can0n4......This smoke on my wife's car smelled very odd. It's in the shop now. Had noticed a smell of oil on the car sometimes recently when we pull in the house garage at night.......It's been quite mild here and I too had noticed a little hot oil smell. But I put it down to the fact I had spilled oil a month ago topping it up between changes.

We have ordered the MAF-S and my shop figures the CCV has a sticky diaphragm and needs replacing. Some pipes too down there under the intake will get replaced too.

Thanks again all for the comments.

RH.

Just an update folks.......and thanks for all your replies.

The CCV was faulty and leaking. Lot of mess around it. We also replaced the MAF as we knew it was faulty. Changed the oil again back to the normal Liqui Molly too. Reflashed the ECU and Transmission firmware.

Seems to be running fine now. But as mentioned the lack of miles my wife drives it's not likely to be out on the highway for an hour or more for some time.

Keep you posted.

RH.
