Question 2008 X3 liftgate will not open

Hi all,

I did a search for this issue and could not find a problem similar to mine.

I have a 2008 X3 whose battery died and needed to be replaced. When the battery was replaced the terminals were put on the wrong ends and it blew some fuses. Took the car to the dealer and they took care of the issue, however, when I got the car back the rear liftgate would not open. The button on the door handle doesn't seem to do anything. I did notice that when I attempted to start the car with the wrong terminals in the rear wiper blade went off and was moving slowly.

I thought it was just a blown fuse that could be easily replaced but I can't find where the fuse for the liftgate is for the life of me.

I know it was a bone head move to put the cables on the wrong terminals... Hope it's not an expensive fix.

Help!

You have tried using the key remote to unlock the hatch?

If that doesn't do anything either, you will have to crawl into the cargo area and find the emergency release lever - not easy.

No, that doesn't work either....

I saw how to open it manually but how do I remedy the problem? I really hope it's just a fuse.

Thanks for your reply!

As it is an electro-mechanical latch that makes it hard to troubleshoot.

If all the other central locking functions are working, and the license plate lights work, I can't see it being a blown fuse protecting just that switch/latch.

If the license plate lights are out, do a search on "grip strip". See: http://www.bimmerfest.com/forums/sho...d.php?t=725740

But I would really expect your problem to be fixed just by manually releasing the latch the one time with the hard-to-find emergency release lever.

I would suspect the module that controls the rear worker and trunk release may have a blown protection diode.

Maybe it is the GM5 module? More info here: http://www.bmwgm5.com/
