F22 / F23 2 Series (2014 - Current)
The 2 Series coupe is the replacement for the E82/E88 1 series coupe. Production starts in November 2013 on the 228i (N20) and M235i (N55) coupes. Look for them in dealerships in February 2014. The convertible F23 2 series will follow in the fall of 2014.

Bimmerfest M235i review

I took an M235i for a ride today. The design looks even better in person than it does in pictures.

The car handles great and the steering felt much tighter than the 4 series M Sport i drove a few months ago.I was really impressed with how great it handled the tight corners at high speeds. The roads were covered in salt dust and the Michelin PSS's just hugged the road through the corners.I stll prefer the handling of my M3 but this car is fun to drive.

The car feels just a tad smaller inside than my E46 M3 but it defintely has enough room for me.The seating position is very similar to the E46,where you are sitting more upright in the car which i prefer.

It would have been great to drive the car in the manual but it was impressive how quickly the automatic shifts in sport. If i was ordering the car i would still choose the manaul.

With great handling and plenty of power for most people BMW is going to sell tons of these cars.

I am very excited to put an order in for the M2 when it is officially released.

Here are some pics,

Thanks for the review. I found it to be wider inside them my E46 M3, interesting.

You are probably right.I was referring more to the back seat, which looked a little bit smaller than my M3.

Nice review!

I was at a dealer this morning to get a tire replaced that had a puncture (yay for getting to use my tire/wheel insurance for once!). I got to see the demo M235i, but they unfortunately had no cars on the lot for a test drive. I agree that the car looks great in person. I think my e92 is more attractive overall, but I find the 2 to be a really nice looking car. I do appreciate the positioning, which is higher, the orientation of controls is focused on the driver,... some of the controls felt nicer than the last 3 series loaner I received, but the steering wheel, while nice, has a squishy feel to it and lacks the perforated leather of the m-sport steering wheel of the last generation.

I may run to another dealer near work tonight and see if I can test drive the car there, but it'll be after work, in peak of rush hour traffic, so I don't know how well I'll be able to test it.

Is there actually going to be a legit M2? I thought this was supposed to fill that entry M car role?

I had to go test drive one, now seeing as how they are at dealerships and got to see one on a showroom floor yesterday while I was getting my tire replaced.

First off, it sounds great even with the standard exhaust. My 335is sounds lovely. This one is extremely nice as well. Upon getting in the car, in comfort mode, the car drives well, but the steering is a big jolt of reality. This is very very light. You really have no clue what is going on underneath you as well. I had read all the reviews, but wasn't sure what to expect. It feels like a different car brand somehow managed to get their steering in there. I am used to my car pulling and pushing under pavement imperfections. This car has none of that. The steering does get a bit heavier in Sport+, but still much more assisted than my e92 and still no feedback.

As to Sport+ I know that this being a showroom car it isn't going to behave like a normal daily driver would, but the initial feel was that Sport+ kinda sucks. The car pulls well, but the transmission always feels like it is getting ahead of itself. Very rough shifts. I'll assume and hope this evens out with daily driving. Sport felt much smoother. Shifts not as fast as my DCT transmission, but very respectable. Up and down shifts were good.

Oh yeah, those brakes are pretty beefy. They'll certainly do the job. I don't think the m performance brakes are necessary unless you do a lot of tracking.

The dealership I went to isn't located in an area where I could really conduct a test of the car's fun factor, unfortunately.

I noticed the finish of this car seemed like a big step down from the 4 series. Controls on that car are bigger, better situated and had a nicer feel. This isn't to say that the 2 feels like crap, but that the new 4 series seems to merit its name change because my e92 doesn't feel as high quality as the new 4. But it sort of further cements my idea that the 2 series is the better car for me. The 4 feels closer to a 5 series than to the old 3 series.

Hopefully some dealers will have a car with more options than premium package in the months to come.

Here are a couple of threads on bimmerpost, which basically confirm that there will be an M2 from people that work for BMW.

If this actually happens, I wonder what it will mean for the 235M. From what board sponsors say, there will be a small number produced, at least at first. Does BMW increase production, get rid of it, drop the power back down to 300/300 or have 3 (or more) 2 series cars? If they leave it as is, they would need to make the M2 much more powerful than the 235M to justify the large price difference. N4S

Thanks for these pics!

I saw both a Black Sapphire Metallic and an Estoril Blue 2-series in person at dealer launch and I just changed my order. I had originally ordered Estoril, but after seeing the black I fell in love! Makes the car look much more aggressive than the blue.
