28i vs 35is

I have read a few threads and articles concerning the differences in performance between the 28i and 35is. Anyone on here that has actually owned both models that could give feedback?

This is a 2nd vehicle for me, so not so much a daily driver. I have a 28i and potentially interested in moving to a 35is later this summer with ED and car built to my spec.

I dont think you need an owner's comparison. You all ready drive a 28i. Just go and test drive a 35is. You'll be blown away by the performance and sound difference, IMO. there's nothing better than a BMW inline 6.

Anyone know if the reliability is different between the 28 and 35? They are both turbos so I wonder if there's any difference.

The 28i with the N20 is too new to make any reliability claims. The N55 engine has been around since 2009. You will find people who will tell you about problems they've had with the engine, but mechanics I've talked with and read articles from all say it's a reliable engine. That being said, it's never really the engine that's a problem with BMWs - it's the bolt ons.

I have a 335i with the N54 engine. It's an awesome car but trouble free it's not. HPFP, waste gate stuff, left me stranded on the road once... Hence my hesitation with turbo engines. Too bad I'm addicted to BMW. on the Z4 I will opt for the smaller engine just based on price.

I agree with Danf. I am driving a 35i and it has been to service once every two months for recurring issues.

Not entirely on point, but close - I have a 2009 35i and my son has a 2011 30i with the 6 speed sport auto. His is a naturally aspirated 3 liter inline 6 and mine has the twin turbos with 7 speed DCT. The 2.8 is a 4 cylinder turbo and the 35is is a tuned 35i with a slight HP boost.

I also previously owned 2 2006 Z4 3.0si which had the naturally aspirated inline 6 with some tweaked HP increase. In addition to the extra HP, it had some other nice features standard such as wider tires, better wheels, premium sound etc. I think you get some additional goodies standard with the 35is compared to the base model.

My son's car has plenty of power and acceleration, but it's not half as fun as my 35i with the turbos. To each his own, but I am really glad I got the big engine as well as the 7 speed DCT that came with it. Very smooth shifting - almost unnoticeable. Big sound as turbos kick in too.

If you are ordering new, the HPFP issues are really old news, applicable to older versions (like mine ) so I wouldn't count those old problems against the newer 35is engines.

My advice - GO BIG OR GO HOME!
