2005 Z4 Advice Needed

Hi All,

New to the forum and new to being a bmw owner... Purchased a 2005 Z4 with 40,000 miles on it a month ago that was in very good shape, pristine engine compartment and you could tell it was taken care of... Anyway, my wife took it to see some family and the service engine light came on which I pulled a code for - P0442 Evap leak. Since I didn't have a good scanner for bmw, I just didn't drive it while waiting for the code reader.

Today I went out to start work on it and when it started up, smoke came out the tail pipe which was a first. I drove it around the block to warm it up and when pulled back in my garage the car was smoking out the hood. On further inspection I see smoke coming out of the rear engine area towards the firewall. Taking an extension mirror and looking all around I see no oil leaking and the engine itself is spotless. There are no signs of an oil leak under the car either so I really don't know what to do... Do I assume it is the valve gaskets and replace it or could it be something more serious in the engine itself? I can't find any indication this model has engine issues, especially with relatively low miles on them but who knows.

Any advice you could provide on determining the cause would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Funny that you don't see any sign of an oil leak wth all that smoke. Are you sure it's smoke from oil and not steam from a coolant problem?

Posting what model Z4 or which engine you have would be helpful for us to try to provide some more specific advice......

Sorry, its a 3.0, and it didn't smell like coolant more like burning oil but I will try to verify, just don't want to ruin it. Probably going to pull a couple plugs to see what they look like and tear down the top a bit to see if I can find any oil way in the back. The coolant was low, but only by a few cups or so. After reading more - the last 3 hours - many have similar issues with CVV?? Thank you for your input. I will learn how to post

Definitely something to look into considering the cars age.

I would be willing to bet it is the valve cover gasket. My 2004 Z4 3.0i did the same thing and that is what it was. Good luck.
