2014 M6 GC or M5

Posting in M5 forum to hear from owners..

My lease on 2012 X5 50i gets over in a couple of months. Prior to that I had a 2007 530i. I have been in the BMW family for 8 years now and would like to continue the same. However, I am looking for something difference - an exciting and special/cool ride. In my area (Seattle), there are far too many 3s, 5s, 7s, X5s, X3s, several Mercedes/Lexus and few Porsche models. As a result, the current (and past) vehicle doesn’t feel special.

Thus, I am seriously considering the 6 GC – I hardly see them on the roads. And the M6 GC to make it more fun. There are many things I like and some not as much.

Pros:

- Looks very aggressive from both font and back! Sits low. For a change, the rear end of 6 looks cool – it is wider and lower than a 5
- Drives extremely well and feels like a sports car. Over the weekend I drove a fully loaded M6 GC and I am still excited by the feel of the ride ***61514;
- Shakir orange and Blue colors are very nice
- It has the cool factor that very few cars have. I know that’s a very subjective assessment

Cons

- We don’t get much sun here in Seattle. I enjoy the panoramic glass roof on my X5. However, the 6 has carbon roof – meaning no glass roof and the interior looks dark
- Much pricier than M5. For lease, it will make couple of hundred difference/month. I can swing it but I feel like BMW is charging too much extra for a different form factor
- Rear room is a slight con but it will be used primarily by kid

I would love to hear feedback and your thought process when you decided to get the M5.
Also, did you consider M6 GC – what made you decide for M5?

I did not try out a M6 GC prior to purchasing my M5. I personally have always loved the M5, it is my favorite M car. I love the fact that it is a 4 door sedan that can really handle and haul ass and I have always loved the look of the M5. I think the M6 GC is a awesome sedan, but I do not think it is $ 10,000.00 to $ 20,000.00 nicer than a fully loaded M5. Although it comes down to personal preference. Both are great sedans.

Coming from an X5, I think you will like the M5 better. I test drove both the M% and the M6GC. The M6 GC just felt much smaller to me sitting in the driver's seat even though it is actually a few inches longer. It is also lower than the M5 which I did not like since I was coming from a larger car. Drive them both and you will probably find the decision a very easy one. The M6 just did not feel as good as the M5, but that was just me. Someone coming froma 3 series would probably think the opposite.

I will drive the M5 sometime soon. Still enamored with the drive of M6GC from couple of weeks ago. Although M5 sounds more practical than 6 from space and $ perspective, my main peeve is that it looks the same as a regular 5 which is all over the place. If I am spending top $, I would want the vehicle to look and feel special!

Well, an M6 GC really doesn't look too different from a regular 6 GC either. The difference is that the price point of a regular 6 GC is too close to a 7 and most in that price category will opt for the 7. Because of the price point of a regular 5 series and the various models, you see more of them. I bought my M5 because I love the car and I really figured out after owning the B7 that I do not need everyone looking at me or my car. People who know what the M5 is still make comments, but it's how I feel driving the car that is important, not getting noticed.

You want to get noticed, take a look at the Maserati or the new Alpha coming out.

Suraj,

I actually like the fact that M5 does not look that much different from a 5 Series, but keep in mind that most people do not even see difference between different models of BMW. It all depends on who is looking at the car ...

What people think was not a factor for me. I liked the practicality of M5 and the balance it had to offer, and I could not be any happier with the car. Besides, I am not too crazy about interior of 6 series and like the front of an M5 better - a bit too much for my test on the M6!

Good luck - make a decision that you dont regret and forget about what people think.

Btw, Whatever you do, stay away from Maserati unless you only interested to drive a head turner - there is no comparison between what you get with a M5/M6 vs. Maserati ;^)

Good insights. Perhaps I didn't communicate right - my primary motivation is NOT to get noticed with the vehicle. Main goals are "feel good" and "do something different" which come with a nicely designed machine having special capabilities. Part of the feel good is not to drive something that is commodity. I would say FORTUNATELY many luxury cars have become commodities in select cities which speaks to the strength of local economy. After 530i and X5 50i, vehicles that feel different are "M & Coupe", Porsche Macan (smaller size and less weight are +ves in comparison to Cayenne). I will test drive Ghibli, however I have heard lot of -ves against the Maserati brand. Haven't considered Mercedes personally - it is reserved for wife

Drive both and make up your own mind. Do not listen to a dealer. My dealer almost begged me to take the M6 GC they had on the lot when my B7 turned out to be a lemmon. I drove both and chose the one I liked best. I do not regret it for one minute. Drive both.
