Key doesn't unlock drivers door

1994 (E32) 740iL (4th owner as of 3 days ago)
Turn the Key to the right and it locks all 4 doors (including Driver's door). Then turn the key to the left and it unlocks all the doors EXCEPT the drivers door. Am I doing something wrong or do I need to take the door panel off and see what is what?

Yep door panel off. While you do the lock fixing leave the passenger window down in case...........

Key doesn't unlock drivers door

It goes a bit deeper than that. I have had the door panel off, the end of the locking mechanism is broken off. It also looks like the window drive motors on the drivers door and left passenger's door are defective. I do have a remote key, but all it does is make noise in the dashboard. Oh, and the AC is out, the Sunroof will close but not open, and I think I have a bad lifter on one of the cylinders.

It wouldn't be a project car without problems.

Thanks for your reply,

Rick Schoenling

1) Wrecker for the door lock part; 2) All window lift motors are the same - the frame changes. Either rebuild existing or wreckers again; 3) Remote keys are a bit of a dark art; 4) AC could be a simple re-gas or a simple rebuild - not enough detail; 5) Sunroof is a bitch to remove / refit - you will need a shop manual; 6) Probably a follower rather than a lifter. Follower has a manual clearance adjustment - Lifter is non adjustable. Not innterchangable. Enjoy your project!!

Wrecker? Two peoples separated by the same language :-)? Maybe that means Junk Yard? Might be hard to find one here. I can probably find a parts supplier online, Bavarian parts website perhaps. The AC may work, it is either the blower motor or the blower motor resistor at fault. Needs to be fixed before Winter comes (I know in your end of the world it is Winter already) As for the Sunroof, I have replaced the motor and the switch which got it to close electrically. I replaced the General Module(ZKE) in the hopes of restoring power to the "open Roof" circuit, no such luck. The previous owner provided the correct Allen Wrench to manually turn the motor and open the roof, so that and an open passenger window provides air flow in the absence of AC. Once I have disposable income I can fix it all, but I have been saying that since I bought it.

Over here 'junk yard' is a scrap metal merchant. 'Wreckers' dismantle vehicles to sell useable parts. Your door lock probs sound electrical switch related. I would expect to be able to trigger the locks from the inside; doors closed; door card (your quaint term) removed. If that is the case then you have no serioous probs, just a switch that is not being operated by the key. Keep us all posted so we can help with the next bit............
