most "resalable" color?

Hi All,

I am rejoining BMW after 10 years on the dark side (two new 911s, one 996 + one 997S, kept for 5 years each). I am looking at a new 435i to be used as a daily driver. The Porsches are great cars, but are challenging as DDs. The majority of my ownership was in the mountain areas of Colorado where they can be "let out" to run. My previous BMW ownership is an E39 540i, an R1100R, and a 2002tii (back in my youth).

I am mulling over colors. Are there any colors that dominate resale? I would not pick a color that I didn't like on that basis, but if I am down to 2 or 3 that all appeal to me, that might be a tiebreaker.

Rick

All are about the same but silver and dark silver/slate may be a bit higher. Edmunds can value a hypothetical car and show the difference if you enter a color. Maybe you can try a 2005 328i in white and then change colors. The difference might be $20.

First off, welcome aboard.

The answer isn't so much what colors to choose but rather which colors to avoid. Champagne, Red, Burgandy can drag you down, Black, White, Blue's, or Grey's can't hurt you. Since you're leaning towards a 435i, you're ultimately going to attract a sporty buyer down the road, so a sporty color likely is best.

Actually, I'm leaning toward mineral grey. I'm assuming that it does not have the same maintenance requirements as black. ["black is not so much a color as a hobby"] Am I right? It looks sharp - in pictures, and in person.

Yes, Mineral Grey is a great color because its low-maintenance compared to Black, shows reflections and curves better than White or Silver, and hides the dirt well. That said, its probably the most popular color out there and you lose uniqueness as a result.

I have the MG and it shows plenty of dirt. MY previous two 335 coupes were black and then white. Black was the worst as we all know, but BMW black is worse than any other. It showed every mark, swirl, and every scratch, much worse than the black Nissans I had years ago. The AW was great. You could get away with washing it once a month and it looked good. I only have the MG about a month. It is great at hiding scratches and swirls(if their are any) but it does show dirt more that white or silver would. So far I am happy, but the MG is a little darker than I thought it would be. The old Space gray was better at hiding dirt.

That is good feedback. I don't mind keeping a car clean (so I don't worry so much about showing dirt), but I don't want to be chained to a buffer. Black is the best color when it is obsessively maintained, but who has the time - or skills - to do that.

I'm leaning toward red. Why? Because I like red and am tired of all the boring whites, grays, blacks that you see everywhere. My last 4 BMW's have been gray, dark blue, gray, gray and I'm sick of those colors. You walk on a BMW lot and what do you see; white, gray, black. Boring! I'm not buying to please anyone but myself and don't care what the next guy thinks. If I get a few dollars less on trade a few years down the road, no big deal. I'm not going to compromise what I want to please somebody else 4 years later. If you have to worry about a $100 more or less several years from now then you probably shouldn't be buying a BMW anyway.

Stick with neutral colors if you're concerned about resale value.

It definitely varies by region.

BMWs are are as common around these parts as a Civic or Corolla but the local dealer really only stocks 3 colors: White, Black, Silver with a heavy emphasis on white. White is just a super common color here for all vehicles because of the intense sun and long summers.

I've yet to see another Mineral Grey F30 or even Estoril Blue or any red color locally.

Black, Silver and White are most common in our area. Gray as well. Typical but Silver would probably get you the best resale value. I read it is the most popular color today throughout the USA. That's why I chose Estoril Blue... to be different and specifically not follow the "heard of sheep" on the road. Go with your first "love" and stick with it. No matter what color you choose there will always be "A" buyer out there which is all you need anyway. I had a person take over my Lease on a GS 430 I had in the color RED w/beige interior. He flew up from Ft. Lauderdale with this wife and mother, spent the weekend in Baltimore, I met him there, and he drove home in it. Go figure... easy lease transfer.

Like the others have said, black, silver and white are your best colors for resale. I chose silver because I was coming from a black car and wanted something easier to maintain and even though silver is a common color typically, I have only seen one BMW F30 in silver here in Minneapolis since I got mine last year. Not saying there are not any because there are, but less than the MG, White and Black. Even on the lot there was 1 silver for every 5 blacks. Black seems to be the most popular with BMW then white then silver.

A number of people appear to have missed this from the OP:

"I am mulling over colors. Are there any colors that dominate resale? I would not pick a color that I didn't like on that basis, but if I am down to 2 or 3 that all appeal to me, that might be a tiebreaker."

Exactly because so many people have the stock colors, I went with the Sparkling Bronze. I've yet to see another. Now, it could be argued that if you're going to drive a BMW, why get it in earth tone? I suggest it leaves a smaller eco-visual footprint on the world.

Like almost anything else negative about the auto industry, the answer usually is "Pinto".

Silver is popular but not the most popular. I got it because it looks nice and is easy to care for.

I would like to get a bright yellow BMW but they don't make them. Resale would be less if they did. Yellow is easy to see so it's a safe color. Airport friction testers are usually yellow.

For Phoenix, I would want Alpine White (Alpinweiss). It gets really hot there.

White cars sell really well in the desert Southwest.
