ac condenser

HI

anyone out there use a parallel flow condenser.

did you see an improvement with your ac performance, is there a brand out there that is best

I converted from r12 to r134a and the performance is horrible, I know r134a does not work as well as r12 but once it gets to 90 degress the ac is useless.

I converted meaning I had a qualified shop do the conversion, not done at home. i have replaced the compressor, evaporator, accumulator, discharge hose. Not 100% sure about high/low pressure switch

thanks
al

How do you convert R12 to r134? My 91 318ic has R12 and is starting to get warmer. Do you need to change compressor or hoses? Or just vac out and charge with R134?

On my 87 325e when I converted the shop replaced the compressor expansion valve, I am not sure if this work is necessay. BTW the ac on my 325e works well with R134, maybe your expansion valve is getting clogged or the condensor coil is not getting good air flow.

when i got my car the ac did not work and needed a new compressor etc so converting made sense but if it was a recently working system I would have stayed with r12. but the status of my system was unknown how long it was broken, otherwise i would have stayed with r12

if you want to convert these are some suggestions
take it to a good ac shop, this is not something you can do at home without the ability to
evacuate the system properly.
they need to verify your compressor will support r134a
if you move forward make sure to change the high/low pressure switch and the dryer

did you verify that the aux fan is working?

other than that, sounds like low on charge or bad expansion valve

if its already converted go grab a can of 134a from an auto parts store with the gauge. connect and see where it ends up on the charge. at least that way, youre only down $20 and that would tell you if you got a leak.

thanks

i added a can and no improvement in pressures. i think it might be the low/high pressure switch. temperature out 77 low pressure=40 and high pressure=70, even after adding Freon.
If i open the system i want to replace the condenser because even when it works properly it still is horrible at 90 degrees and above. Which takes me back to my original question about parallel condenser versus the oem tube and fin style.

ac condenser

youre low on charge or the metering device is oversized/stuck open. high side needs to be around 100psig.

I converted mine to R134 a few years back. Mine had a blown out hose so it was already empty and I have a vacuum pump and gauges for R134. So I swapped the dryer, sucked it down, and charged it up. It works OK but like the OP and every other car i've done an R12 to R134 swap it can't keep up if temps get up over 90. From what I hear from others far more knowledgeable about A/C systems a better more modern style condenser is the best bet. But honestly I've never even looked into it for the E30. For me I just drive my pickup when it gets that hot. Which thankfully isn't often here in NH.

need to change the metering device to even get it close. if you just change the dryer, the condenser isnt the problem. i do this for a living on homes.

should see what you have to do to retro fit a home from r-22 to 410a, whole new ac.
