Custom car panels

So about a year ago I started thinking about what I should get as a first car and just recently (due to not really needing a car on a day to day basis) I decided that I should something that I can really mess around with. I've always thought that cars are considered as such a difficult and serious hobby and I'm hoping you guys may be able to help me change that

Any way, I'm looking into buying a 1996 e36 4dr in a couple of months and I'm wondering how I could go about modifying the boot panel. I love the back end of the car, but the original spoiler in my opinion looks out of place. I've seen guys completely fabricate custom panels so it hypothetically it shouldn't be too difficult to do

I got the idea from this picture (that was potentially originally from bimmer, I can't remember) and whilst clearly doctored, looks really clean. Anyone with experience in this kind of thing, I would love to hear what techniques/materials you used!

Also this is what I'm planning on getting the front of the car looking like when I eventually finish the project.

I must say that this car is going to be purely for the experience of seeing how far I can modify and improve, so I'm fully expecting to put in a lot of hours and $$$ on getting it to where I want it. If I do decide to start the build, I'll keep an updated wiki on it Cheers!

Should also say this is going to be a crazily diy car. Anything that can be done by me and my mechanic friend, will be (including painting)
