X1 or X3?

How did you decide to get your X3? Was the X1 a serious contender for you, and if so, what tipped it?

X1 or X3?

Parked both side by side and the cargo area sealed the deal for buying X3.

Mein Auto: Hoping for an X3
It really just came down to the size of the car, especially the back seat and cargo area. If I wanted something that small I would have just opted for the 3 series sedan.

Not saying the X3 is overly generous with space, but the X1 struggles to be an SUV at all.

Test drove both

I test drove both the X1 and the X3 and the X3 is a better value is you want a small SUV ($ per Sq ft of space). I would pick a 3 series sedan over the X1.

Was seriously thinking about X1 before but ended up with X3. The interior of X1 felt a bit lacking in terms of luxury given that you're paying a fair amount for the car. The handling/drive and overall feel of the X3 is just much better than the X1.

I had an X1 and just just moved to an X3. The X1, while fun to drive, was just too small when it came to cargo, kids, etc. The X3 is great so far - feels cavernous by comparison - and brings a much more "premium" feel.

Went in looking to buy an X1 but ended up with an X3. The X1 looked a little too wagonish for my taste and the interior was very tight... even tighter than my Lexus convertible that only fits a 10 year old in the back. The interior was also a bit nicer in the X3. The X1 drives a LOT more like a car though.

We drove the 28i and the 35i in both the x1 and X3 and ended up with a 35i X3. I kind of wish we could have waited for the X4s but we needed something much sooner.

Drive them both and see which one you like better.

The X1 felt more squished and my wife thought it looked too much like a wagon. Adjust the front seat on the X1 to exactly where you want it and then seat in the back seat to give you an idea of the real world leg room (our dealer moved the front seat up all the way before we got in). The X1 also felt lower like a car.

The two are just different. Go with X3 if you need a midsize SUV (on the smaller side). X1 is more of a hatchback. Absolutely disagree with some of the handling comments above . X1 handles significantly better. It is pretty much the e90 platform.

Now, the argument to go with 3 series instead of X1 doesn't quite work. At least didn't work for me because of the steering.

The X1 was part of the last generation when BMW focused more on the sporty and less on the lux. The X3 is part of the newer generation.

I picked my X3 based on the size of the interior and the slightly higher riding height.

I had a loaner X1 for the past 2 days, and I'm really glad I picked the X3. The X3 seems like a more premium vehicle (even though mine now has 30k miles on it). I dare say it handles better, as well. If you pitched the X1 into a corner, it would oversteer in a far less predictable fashion than the X3 does, and I was really not pleased with the dynamic handling characteristics (comparing apples to apples on the same suspension level). There is also far less room in the back of the X1 (back seat and rear), regardless of what the measurements say.

I believe the X3 is sportier and more luxurious, as well as being roomier. Win-win.
