New member here 1985 318i

Hello,

First off, I don't own the above mentioned car. But I have been left in charge of it's repair. The car was purchased from a tow company for my daughter over a year ago. The state it was last registered was Washington. We live in California with all of its smog emission related rules. You can see where this is headed...

Who ever had this car before did a lot of mickey mouse stuff to the engine area. The mass airflow sensor bracket was broken off, there are wires with plugs that go to something but I need a good picture of the engine compartment to figure it out.

Okay my first question is...
What smog emissions components should be on this car that would not have been required by the State of Washington?

I can send pictures just as soon as the batteries for my camera charge. Thank you in advance!!!

Welcome to Bimmerfest. That sounds like a potentially big and expensive project for a old 3 series. Does CA require smog on a car that old? There was very little smog stuff in 85 as far as I know.

Smog equipment on 1985 318i

Hello Tim,

I just checked Ca. DMV website. Vehicles made in 1975 or prior are exempt. The previous owner bought the car in Washington and never completed the transfer of ownership in California. This is the only car my daughter has and needs it for work.

The car is drive able. The hazard lights, brake lights and reverse lights work. I cant get the turn signal to flash in front or back. Would this be caused by a faulty Relay flasher or Turn Signal Relay? And can you please tell me where both are located on the car?

Your help is greatly appreciated!

Thanks,

mzsmith

I've moved your thread over to the E30 3 series forum. I know very little about the E30, hopefully someone in here will be able to help. Search around as well in here, I have a feeling the question has been answered before.

Good luck,
Tim

I would try to get my hands on a Bentley repair manual for the e30 if I were you. It is filled with tons of helpful information.
I recently replaced the entire exhaust from the manifolds back for about $400. Pipes, cat, muffler, hangers, and O2 sensor all from rock auto. When I was purchasing, they had the info on wether or not it was legal in CA.
I hope this helps you out some
