2014 VS. 2015? X3 I-drive, Blind spot detection

Hi All,

After test driving the 3 series wagon, GT, and X1, I have arrived at the X3 for practicality reasons. I have found a 2014 model that I like. It is a 35i and includes tech package, M sport package, driver assistant package, cold weather package, and premium sound system.

I like everything about it, except for the fact that it doesn't have the new idrive touch-sensitive pad. I'm not crazy about the chestnut interior color either, but I think I can live with it. It'd be nice to have blind spot detection (like in my current volvo), but I'm not sure if it's worth the extra dough.

For those of you who have used the the new idrive system and/or the blind spot detection feature, is it worth paying the extra cash for a 2015 model so that I can have these options? Are they useful options? I'm a sucker for cool gadgets, but I can't tell how useful these are. I could see it going both ways.

To give you an idea of pricing, the 2014 MSRP is $57,000, but they're 'discounting' it and it is listed on the dealer's website in Rhode Island for $53,500. Hopefully I can get them to go lower if I go with the 2014.

This is my first BMW and I've only purchased one other car (volvo). Any suggestions about pricing are also greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Have them show you a 5 series on the lot. They have the touch pad as well so you can see first hand if it is something you must have. From what I've read, most people say they barely use the touch pad.

I think the base IDrive system might be more capable too. So possibly more future-proof. Though can anyone know how well these systems will handle new features of phones in 5-6 years time?

The touch pad is more of a toy than a useful tool, definitely not a must have. The blind sport detection is a good safety feature, but if you knwo how to use your side mirror well, you dont really need it. As far as I know, the 2015 idrive system adds the touch pad function but there is no upgrade hardware wise. With the current $2000 factory incentive, you can probably get the 2014 for about $50k, Where as the same 2015 will cost you about $4000 to $5000 more.

I love the Blind Spot Detection feature, my wife has it on her Lexus and it is a very useful feature, I would make sure to get it on all of my future vehicles!

Consider resale value -- yes, 2015's are more money.

But in 3 years, they'll also be worth more money than 2014's and likely more in demand (slightly newer styling).

Depends how much cash outlay you want to do "today". I always consider the "tomorrow" (resale, values, etc).

Even if I had the touchpad I don't think I would use it much. The iPhone app is 1000 times better and goes right to the car. So easy to use.

One thing with your order. I don't think you can get msport with both drivers asst and cold weather. It is one of my biggest complaints that this option combo is not allowed as every other model allows you to (other than x3 / x4). You will end up having to choose between.

Best of luck!

The X3 is holding it's value very well, it's a wash between the two.

According to KBB, a 2011 X3 28i has a trade in value of $24300 and a 2012 X3 is worth $25100. Only a $800 difference between the two model year. If someone is willing to pay $5000 more for a 2015 X3, they can be sure they will not get their money back after 3 years. What they will get is the lastest and greatest, which is very important to some people.

Thank you for pointing this out! A big part of the reason I was considering a 2015 is because I wanted the Driver Assist Plus package. I would rather have the M sport package though. With this said I think that I'll probably go with the 2014 since I found one that has all of the options that I want aside from the blind spot detection. The 2015 updates (idrive touch pad, exterior styling) are definitely cool, but I don't think that it's worth the extra $4-5000 for what I believe are somewhat minor differences.

Also, thank you everyone for the input! Very helpful!

This doesn't happen to be the space grey at BMW Warwick does it? I saw that car there and when I drove by this AM, I noticed it was missing. Did you buy?
