E cluster

the cluster back lighting isnt working. It did work but up and failed a few weeks ago.

I read that maybe the aftermarket stereo would case it to fail. So i pulled the stereo and was able to clean up a few things. Still nothing. the bulbs are of course good ( i tested them). I just picked up another cluster which works and the bulbs are good. This didn't fix the problem either.

I also checked the fuses and they are fine. whats happening? what shall i do?

So assume they are working.

sounds like either a loose connection or broken wire.

i was tryin to ask the backlights to air/heat dials and the clock were coming on. if they are you could eliminate the light switch, for now.

hmmm.

I have inspected and can not seem to find anything. there is a mystery white cable with 2 female ends floating around back there. there isn't any where for them to go however. i believe they were power for the rear antenna. but i cant be sure.

when you say light switch, what do you mean?

the switch to turn on the headlights. sometimes a worn switch could do funny things like that

ahh yes, the light switch..... i cant believe i asked what you were referring to. oh well.

I will pull it out and look at it. That will be my next thing to inspect.

Its almost like my car doesn't want to pass the safety. I fix one thing, another thing breaks. so on and so forth.

pretty frustrated. Fuses check out ok, Grounds appear good, bulbs are tested and work,

not sure how to diagnose a bad light switch, as it appears it is more of a circuit board.

any tips?

the back lights on both clusters dont work so i assume it something else. I will try and source a new switch. but it seems strange that the switch would cause a back light not to work while the rest of the lights work....

bah

i replaced the light switch today and it didn't work...

So my next test will be voltage test for the connector pins.

here's to hoping.

Need help. New switch didn't help. I am now testing pin by pin on the blue yellow and white connectors for voltage and resistance, but my testing isn't going to help because I don't know what pins to test on.. any ideas??

Can someone tell me how to check the contacts from ignition switch to solenoid? Is it all under the hood or do I have to take steering wheel off? I just replaced ignition switch because of starting problem and it didn't fix problem so someone said to check the contacts.

if you find the starter relay, disconnect the battery and ohm out the corresponding terminals. thats the easiest without pulling the column apart

should be OL until the key is turned to the start position then it should drop below 1ohm.

i still cant figure it out. I have tried everything.

Is there a guide which tells me which pins power the back lighting?

Not sure if this is related, however the rear parking lights don't work neither does the front passenger parking light. Again i tested the bulbs and they are all good.

These are the only things keeping me from passing my safety... argh.

Here is what i have tried:
replaced fuses, even tho they were fine
inspected cables behind the dash,
tested the bulbs they work
swapped in another cluster, no resolution
Removed the aftermarket stereo and cleaned up all connections (a lot of mess, surprising actually that some one would install a stereo this way)
inspected the grounds (Seem fine)
swapped in a new headlight switch, no resolution.

Why oh why cant i resolve this. soo annoying, please help.

get a hanes manual as well, it should have wiring diagrams in the back and will tell you what relays go where

I did replace 3 relays in the engine bay but I am not sure if those are related. Which relays are u referring to? I have the Bently manual and it doesn't have anything in there.

Bentley Publishing, not Bentley the car. Bentley published an E30 specific service manual. Seriously, you don't know about those? Bentley publishes manuals for most BMW models/years. They are so good a lot of BMW Techs use them instead of/in conjunction with the BMW-supplied shop manuals.

Sorry, I completely spaced out, and they should have everything you need, if all else fails it's time to take your wiring diagram and go wire hunting and see where all of those components link together and there should lie your problem, takes time but it can be done. I have an e30 that had the original manual and the Bentley manual didn't even cross my mind when I looked. My bad but it should denote wire color and everything find those wires and you'll just have to go from there.

I have reviewed the manual at length. I cant seem to figure it out. I am really hoping to find out which pins power or activate what. the blue, yellow and white connectors are not broken down by pin.

So, i figured i would test the pins first before taking apart my whole wiring harness.
